Healthy Snacking

Hey, how are is your Jumpstart January going?  This is the week where we start to fall off the wagon with our healthy choices so this week you should focus on the why and what.  Why you have made your healthy New Year Resolutions and what you can do to keep from slipping.  One thing that is so important with a healthy diet is to not deprive yourself.  If you do, you’ll end up wanting whatever you have told yourself you can’t have even more.  So, the key is to eat stuff you like in moderation.  A great way to practice healthy moderation is at snack time.

Afternoon snacking is a great way to prevent a crash midway between lunch and dinner.  It is also essential for pre-workout fueling.  So, what afternoon snacks feel indulgent but won’t ruin your diet?  A few of my favs are below.

2. Snack Factory Pretzel Crisps and Tribe Roasted Red Pepper Hummus–  In a word, delicious!  This snack completely satisfies my salty/savory cravings.  The Pretzel Crisps are very low in fat and calories but they pack a lot of flavor (my favorite are the Everything flavor, which are like mini everything bagels).  Dipped in creamy roasted red pepper hummus.  O.k., you can choose any flavor of hummus you want but the roasted red pepper just seems to compliment the pretzels so well.  You have to be careful with portions here.  Make sure to dole our your pretzels before eating and don’t go back to the bag for more.

3. Newman’s Own 100 Calorie MIni Popcorn Bags– Let me tell you that if you make this in your office in the afternoon, you’ll suddenly have a whole lot of new friends.  It smells and tastes amazing but this treat is all good for you!  Low in fat and calories and high in fiber.  Dig in!

4. Baked Tostitos and Salsa– Nothing beats good old chips and salsa.  Save calories and fat by going the baked route for the chips.  Salsa is naturally fat free and low in calorie and even contains some veggies.

Readers, what are your favorite health snacks?

Cheese, cheese and just some more cheese–for protein and to get through the afternoon. We took a poll at work and decided none of liked protein bars, really. Cheese was a top choice.
