Ever since I was a little kid I’ve loved to dance. There was something about turning on music and putting together moves that I loved with every fiber of my being. I started out in ballet when I was just 5 years old.
And continued all the way through college, where I was a part of my college dance company at University of Richmond.
With this long history of dance, it should come as no surprise to you that I am a true fan of Zumba. But I didn’t warm up to it immediately. A couple of years ago I had heard of Zumba but I had not tried it. To be honest, it looked sort of like watered down dance moves to me and I thought with all my dance experience that I would get bored easily. I tried a class or two and was not that impressed. Then something happened, the Zumba Exhilarate DVD set came out. I don’t know if I was attracted to the colors or the marketing (I am pretty much any ad execs dream because I fall for all marketing ploys) but I decided to give it a try and purchased the set. I am so glad I did. It started a passion for Zumba!
The set comes with seven DVDs and they are all fabulous!
Step-by-Step- This DVD shows you the basic Zumba moves that will be used throughout the program. Everything is broken down and done at half time and then sped up for you to practice. Great for beginners.
Activate- This 45 min DVD puts the moves that you learned in the Step-by-Step DVD together and gives you a full class. It is a little bit easier than the other DVDs in the set and so I recommend moving to this DVD first after you have learned the Step-By-Step moves.
Rush- If you are short on time this DVD is for you. It is less than 30 minutes but the instructors are so high energy that you get your heart rate up and burn lots of calories. This is fast paced but so much fun.
Exhilarate- This is a full length 60 minute Zumba class. The music on this DVD is awesome and the moves are so much fun! You get to workout with Zumba creator Beto and his team. This is a non-stop sweat fest but don’t be scared, you’ll make it through.
Ripped- This is the toning DVD that will get you “ripped”. The Exhilarate set comes with weighted maracas that you use for part of this DVD. The DVD is actually split into two 30 minute workouts. The first uses the toning sticks (weighted maracas) to strengthen your muscles. The instructors put together some traditional Zumba moves with strength moves like bicep curls and lunges. The second DVD is Sentao. This is a Zumba special. Its a class created by Zumba using a chair. Its a little bit faster paced than the toning portion but it still focuses on strength combined with Zumba dance moves.
Mix- This is the heart of Zumba, world beats. This DVD is 50 minutes and introduces you to different rhythms from around the world- from belly dancing to tribal to flamenco to hip hop, this DVD has everything. It’s so fun and features a ton of instructors who specialize in their particular style.
Fitness Concert- This DVD has the same music and choreography as the Exhilarate DVD but it is filmed at a live instructor convention in Orlando, FL (home to Zumba). It is literally a huge convention center room filled with hundreds (maybe thousands?) of Zumba fans. The instructors perform on a large stage to live music. It is so high energy and so fun, you almost feel like you are there right along with everyone (but with plenty more elbow room).
I LOVE LOVE these DVDs. They are so awesome. The music is the awesome Zumba music I have come to know and love, the clothes are bright and colorful and the choreography is innovative and fun. You really do feel like you are at a party rather than working out. After trying out all the Zumba DVDs in the comfort of my own home, I was hooked and decided I had to try live classes again. I tried out some great instructors (who I will review and tell you all about in the near future!) and now I’m totally hooked on Zumba. We all deal with the pressures of daily life and I have to say, putting on some really colorful Zumba-wear, listening to music and dancing around foolishly is such a great stress reliever. If you are at all worried about looking totally ridiculous trying out Zumba I have two things to tell you:
1) You will look ridiculous. I look ridiculous and as you can tell from above, I have had YEARS of dance training.
2.) You shouldn’t care that you look ridiculous. First of all, if you buy the Zumba Exhilarate DVD set, you’ll be dancing around in your own home where no one can see you anyway. And if you do go to a class, just know that everyone else will look as ridiculous if not more doing the same things as you. And I can guarantee you, no one is looking at you in class-they are much too concerned with how they look to look at you!

Excellent workout as always. It's challenging, fun and easily one of my favorite workouts!
Fantastic class! Great technique pointers. Always new exercises to challenge oneself!
I am excited to take classes with Brittany in person this summer! I have followed Brittany online for some time. I particularly like the Barre and Pilates workout videos. Her workout techniques reflect current thinking and best practices. She supports all levels of fitness. Definitely worth a try!
Brittany is the BEST. She is inspirational, motivational and innovative. No two classes are ever the same. I'm sad when the summer classes end, but I'm looking forward to checking out her online classes this fall and winter.
My wife and I decided to give Balance Barre Fitness a try and we were not disappointed. We thought the classes would be pretty easy but were surprised at how rigorous they were. The class was great for working on our coordination and core strength. I don't get to many ...
