Mind over Madness-Celebrating the Solstice with Yoga in Times Square

Hey there!  Hope you have been having a fabulous weekend!  The hubs was home from Mexico for the weekend so we decided to do something fun today- go for a bike ride!  Whoot whoot!  It was a beautifully sunny and warm day so we figured going outside for a ride would be the perfect way to spend a summer day!

Because NYC is so busy we generally don’t ride around the city too much.  Instead we threw our bikes in the car and headed over the GW bridge to NJ to bike the Palisades.  To get to the midpoint of the ride, we bike up this large hill.  It is the largest, most difficult hill I have ever biked!  It is a constant, steady climb and the entire way up you think about how much you hate EVERYTHING because you are working so hard and you just want it to end.  Then you get to the top and you can’t even be happy you made it because you are so exhausted.  The good news is the way back is almost all downhill.  And that’s what we do for fun on the weekend!

I would be remiss if I didn’t wish you all a happy summer!  Friday’s Summer Solstice marked the first official day of summer and the longest day of the year.  I was lucky enough to celebrate the solstice in Times Square doing yoga.  Yep, you heard me right- yoga in Times Square.  Athleta hosted the Mind Over Madness Solstice in Times Square day of yoga and I was invited by the kind people of Tampax Pearl Active to enjoy a VIP pass to the event!

I was so excited to be invited by Tampax, which happens to be my favorite brand since even before they invited me to Solstice in Times Square.  I had a great spot right in the front row so I could observe all the happenings at the event!  There were literally thousands of yogis laying down yoga mats to perform asanas in the middle of one of the busiest places on earth.  Amongst the car horns, tourists, tall buildings and flashing neon TVs and signs, there was a collective “om” as we calmed our minds and performed our downward dogs.

The day started with a Pose of the Day demonstration from our sponsors, Tampax.  Instructor Jessica Mahler lead us through an active sequence culminating in our Pose of the Day, Crane Pose.  Check out my pose!

Crane Pose

I think the Crane Pose perfectly embodies Tampax’s motto of Being Awesomely Active!

I had the change to speak with Jessica Mahler after class.  She and I chatted about yoga, celebrating summer and tips for beginners.  Jessica had some great advice for new yogis and those not able to make it to Times Square- just get out and do yoga!  Go outside, go to the beach, enjoy the sun and the sky.  She also noted that it’s really important to listen to your body and to work with it rather than against it.  For beginners, she noted that listening and trusting your teacher is important.  All great tips!

After the Pose of the Day demonstration, we started our full-length class with instructor Paula Tursi from Reflections Yoga.  We started with several rounds of sun salutation variations, which seemed completely appropriate for the celebrating the longest day of the year!

It was pretty amazing to be practicing yoga in the midst of Times Square.  The sun was shining down through the buildings and the sights and sounds of the city melted away as al the yogis moved as one.

In addition to a great yoga class, we also got a cool swag bag full of great stuff from our sponsors.  After class I headed over to the yoga village to check out the sponsor’s tents and picked up some great samples.

The great people from Tampax Pearl Active gave me a pretty sweet gift bag for attending.  A cool yoga mat and bag and some free products.  Sweet!

You had the most perfect weather for this event; although, I’m sure it was pretty hot. The pics are awesome! It’s so cool to see so many people doing Yoga in one spot, no less Time Square!

It was definitely a cool experience! The buildings blocked the sun at the beginning but once it got high enough in the sky it was quite warm! There were classes later in the day and I heard jokes about it being “Bikram yoga!”

Awesome and active to have that many yogis holding their om in Times Square–very special. No wonder you had such great time not to mention deserving of the sunset with relaxation magazines and vino.
