Happy Blogiversary My Own Balance!

Hello all!  Today is a very special day!  My Own Balance turns 1!  I can’t believe it’s already been a year of blogging.  So much has changed over the past year and I really feel like my blog has become my home on cyberspace.  If you don’t mind indulging me, I would love to take a minute to talk about the changes in my life and on this blog.  I also have some fun top posts from the past year for you to check out and because it’s MyOwnBalance’s birthday, I have some really exciting things coming up this week.  So read on to celebrate year 1 and then stay tuned this week to see what’s in store for you all to celebrate!

My Story

I started My Own Balance in July 2012 while working as an attorney at a firm in New York City.  At the time I was working long hours and expected to put aside my personal wants and needs to be available for clients 24/7.  This included cutting back on sleep time, workout time and spending time with my husband and friends.  In addition to a lack of time, I was also under constant pressure to bill hours and generally live a stressful lifestyle that comes hand-in-hand with working as a litigator.  I noticed that many people in my firm did not value a healthy lifestyle like I did and working out and eating healthy was just not a priority for them.

Unlike the members of my firm, I have not only valued a healthy lifestyle, it’s been a passion of mine for years.  As a girl I loved ballet and jazz dancing and as I grew older, this love of being active translated into sports like field hockey and track.  I was in a dance company in college and I taught group fitness classes before and after college.  Hand-in-hand with being active was eating healthy and while I have no shame in indulging, I have always made healthy food choices a priority of mine.

I felt that I needed an outlet.  A place where I could share my love of healthy living and talk about things that were important to me.  One day while searching for something across the web, I came across a blog that I began to read regularly.  It was not long before I decided I could start my own blog.  My Own Balance was born as a way for me to find balance in my hectic life and to create a space where I could emphasize the improtance of healthy living.  Of course, My Own Balance is also about balancing healthy living with things that make life worth living: indulgences, travel and generally having fun.  I wanted to capture it all here and in the past year, I feel that I have.

MOB Growth

When I started My Own Balance I didn’t really know anything about blogging.  I thought you just got a website and started writing.  Wait, there are people who are professional bloggers?!?  You have to share on social media!?  I need a Twitter account!?!

I have spent the past year learning so much about blogging.  I’ve gone from a tiny, self-designed website to today’s version, which I happen to love, designed by NW Designs.  I’ve worked with brands, attended FitBloggin and met incredible people.  The blogworld is a lot smaller than I thought and I feel so happy to have met so many people that are interested in the same things I love!  All you fitness freaks out there know what I’m talking about, am I right?

I don’t think I can adequately verbalize here the myriad of changes this blog has undergone in this one year alone but suffice to say, I look at it as not just a hobby but a life project that I’m excited to work on everyday.  I look at landscapes, food, clothes, everything now with an eye for how it can be photographed for the blog (I now love photography! Who knew!?).  I look for opportunities that I think will be fun to share with you all.  I can’t imagine not having MyOwnBalance.  I am so excited to see how much it grows in year 2!

Happy Anniversary! I too work in a large law firm with the usual suspects and lifestyle that you’ve described. It’s really difficult to keep up a health lifestyle, although I’m determined to do so. I spent the first two years not making me a priority and now I’m really trying to change that, although the job doesn’t always allow it. Are you still litigating? How do you find your balance? I’m excited to read your favorite posts!

Thanks Natalie! It’s really tough, especially when there is a lot of pressure to bill hours and when you are more junior (which I found to mean- you’re personal life & happiness doesn’t really matter). I’ve actually transitioned away from litigating and I’m hoping to do a post on my career change soon but some things are still in the works so I’m holding off for a bit! 🙂

For me, balancing law firm life and health/fitness was difficult. I truly just put my foot down in some circumstances and stopped worrying about whether or not I was going to lose my job/not get a good bonus/not get promoted. I realized that if I had to sacrifice sleep, workouts and healthy eating, it just was not worth it. Granted in some instances I had to give these things up a bit but I tried to set boundaries and I found when I had confidence to do that, people generally respected my decision (although not always). I also was really, really good about eating at the office. I never ordered dinner with other people and I stayed away from cake, pizza, cookies, etc and tried to stick with my own healthy options even if it meant bringing three meals a day to the office. How do you balance your work and healthy living?

I work out in the morning before work, before the BB begins going off and emails start flying. I also try and just stop now at a certain time regardless of what’s going on b/c I know that I can’t function without exercise and I can’t exercise without sleep. I’m also a vegetarian (a little fish sometimes), so that really makes the eating healthy easier. I stick to salads in the office and bring my own snacks. But it’s really hard – this isn’t a sustainable lifestyle! Can’t wait to hear about your career move!

I’m about to start work at the firm I summered at (taking the bar this week, then two months before the blackberry starts ruling my life!). I get a lot of inspiration from lawyers who are making it work, like you two! I’ve found that the “putting your foot down” rule is what a lot of people mention when they talk about how they manage work and a healthy lifestyle. Thanks for being inspiring!!

Thanks Charlotte! I’ve actually moved on from working as a litigator and I’m hoping to do a post soon about my career change! Finance is a really tough profession as well. Are you going to blog full-time or move into something health/fitness related? I’m so interested! Good luck! 🙂

Happy one year blogiversary! I started a blog for similar reasons- I love that we can connect with so many people through blogging who share a passion for healthy living. And I had no idea how much work it would be in regards to social media! It can be exhausting sometimes. I’m excited to read what you have in store for the rest of the week!!

I love your layout! Can you give me some info about the company that designed it? I’m looking to move my blog to Word Press (I have someone lined up to help me migrate it) but I want to find a great layout to use before I move it. I’m not looking to break the bank, but I need help!

    Hi Britt!

Happy anniversary! I write a blog both personally (www.nicolelabonde.com) and for my business (www.cabarretfit.com). Sometimes they crossover. Sometimes they don’t. But I write mainly to keep myself accountable. Having a public forum to share my thoughts actually makes me feel responsible TO share them.

I read blogs to get inspired- new ideas for my business, my workout, my life. I’m definitely adding yours to the list! I love connecting with dancers, past and present!

I love blogging because it lets me combine my loves of writing and everything related to food, exercise, and healthy living, with a good amount of posts sprinkled in there talking about my life and things I have going on. I live 2,500 miles away from my family, so the blog is also a nice way to keep them up to date with things I’m doing. I just find it so much fun!

I love reading blogs because it gives me new ideas for workouts and meals, new perspectives and insights, and makes me feel connected in the healthy living blog world.

    Happy Blogiversary!!

    Happy Blogiversary!

I blog because I love to write and I’m too chicken to sit down, put together a manuscript and send it off to publishers. I also love the support and sense of community I am finding in the running and fitness blogging world. It’s amazing.

I’m new to your blog (found you through SPA), and so no favorite post yet, but I’m sure I’ll find one soon.

I love reading about other people’s successes and struggles. Sometimes, I get great ideas on how to tackle a particular challenge I’m having, or am able to offer advice to someone else. I love race and training recaps and I’ve learned so much about myself and my running journey through the blogs I read.

Hi Jenn! Thanks so much for stopping by! 🙂 You should definitely send a manuscript to publishers. The worst they can say is no and at the end of the day you will be no worse off than you are now. I love all the reasons why you blog. You articulate them so elegantly. I’ll be sure you to check our your blog!
