Yogurt, Juice, Running and More!

Hey all!  I can’t believe it’s already Friday!  Yay!  Love a week that flies by! 🙂  Do you have any fun plans for the weekend?  I’ve got some fun things up my sleeve so I’m looking forward!  Today’s post is full of a few random tidbits here and there so bear with me! 🙂

First up, can I just tell you how much I hate stomach aches?  Like, I really hate them.  So you can imagine my dismay yesterday when I found out that Chobani was recalling it’s yogurt  I was even more dismayed to find out that the recall code number and dates matched my yogurt.  The one I had already eaten for breakfast.  Yeah. . .

Moldy chobani

Now, you know I’ve professed  my love for Chobani before (here and here) and I’m not that upset about the fact that the yogurt was recalled for mold (well, I am, but these things do happen).  What I’m upset about is that this has been an issue for awhile.  I’ve read various reports that claim Chobani was taking yogurts off the shelves as early as last week.  I actually had a yogurt that was bloated even though the expiry date was far off.  The Hubs told me it was bad and I should throw it away.  This was at least a week ago.  Of course, I had no idea this could be a widespread problem.  I wish Chobani had been more upfront about the issues with the yogurt sooner.  I am really upset that the opportunity for me to eat the yogurt occurred.  I make every effort not to put myself at risk for consuming tainted food and I feel deceived that I was allowed to eat something that could be potentially harmful for my health.  I’ve had enough stomach issues for this week, thankyouverymuch.

Oh, were you wondering about the other stomach issues?  Well, I did a cleanse this week! Wait, WHAAAT?  Did I just say I did a cleanse?  Did I not just write a post about the potential harmful effects of cleanses?  Okay, so I didn’t really do a cleanse.  I had to go in for a, cough, procedure this week to check my colon as a result of some family medical history that puts me at a greater risk for polyps (which you can learn more about here and here).

Blue Print Juice Clenase 3

Part of the procedure involves not eating for an entire day beforehand.  I thought this would be a good time to try some of the juice cleanse products since I was allowed to drink liquids.  I drank a Blue Print lime, ginger, lemon and agave juice at 11 am hoping it would get me through lunch.  Unfortunately upon finishing the juice bottle I felt incredibly nauseous and had the worst stomach ache.  I couldn’t understand!  I had tried this juice before with no problems.  After doing some major Googling, I learned that this kind of nausea is actually quite common with these juice cleanses.  I guess the juices can really irritate your stomach.  So, no more juice cleanses in my future!

Ok, have you heard enough of my complaining already!?  I’m sorry! 🙂  Let me tell you about two great things!  Last week I had the opportunity to head downtown for an event hosted by Tampax with espnW.  Tampax was kind enough to invite me to view their end of summer finale event.  They have been working all summer to promote their Awesomely Active campaign which is all about women staying active and living without limits.  EspnW has been doing a similar campaign called 98 Days to Shine.  In both campaigns women from all over took photos of themselves being active.  I had the opportunity to view a selection of the photos at the event!

Tampax Finale 2

Oh, and you might see someone familiar in there if you check out the photos on Tampax’s Facebook page.  Voting ends October 6th so don’t forget to submit yours!

In addition to checking out all the amazing photos of women from around the country doing amazing things from lifting tire, cheerleading, surfing and more, I also got to hang out with the awesome ladies at Tampax and my friends Anna from Tough Lipstick and Abby from Abby’s Road to Amazingness.  Obviously crazy times ensued! 🙂

Lastly, I know a lot of you are runners out there so I must mention this awesome run coming up later this month!  Women’s Health Magazine and FEED are hosting their 2nd annual Run10FEED10 event, a 10k to combat hunger.  The concept is simple: run a 10K and provide 10 meals for those struggling with hunger in New York. Last year, RUN10 FEED10 raised 1 million meals nationwide.  The run will take place on September 22nd in NYC.  If you would like to register, visit AND I’ve got a special discount code for you all!  Get $5 off your registration fee by entering the promo code: R10F10USA.

Readers, what do you think of the Chobani recall?  Have you ever had to not eat for an entire day?  Do you race for a cause?

I can’t believe that you were eating the same yogurt they recalled! Crazy!! I have heard about the BPC before, I tasted one with pineapple at an event and it wasn’t half bad! I should probably do a cleanse since I have tummy issues AND family history of colon issues as well. The 10k looks fun!!

If you do choose to do a cleanse, I would recommend going easy on yourself and allowing some healthy solid options like some nuts or something because the juice really did irritate my stomach for some reason!

ugh yeah i heard about that recall. that sucks you had those yogurts! and girrrl i do not know how its possible not to eat for a day, even for a medical procedure! (actually, polyps run in my family too, so im going to have to get the same thing done sooner or later, so i guess ill find out!) and i voted for your photo!! i hope you win!!

Thanks Charlotte! It’s not a fun process preparing for that procedure but if it runs in your family, it’s an unfortunate must do item. At least you can take a day off work! 🙂

Thankfully, I am a Fage fan and haven’t tried Chobani yet! I actually ate at a really popular restaurant two weeks ago (that I just found out through Twitter) got shut down due to an E.Coli outbreak! I was shocked and so happy that nothing serious happened to me.

I totally bought Fage for this coming week’s breakfasts. Oh man, I can’t believe that about the E.Coli outbreak! That is serious stuff. So glad you didn’t get sick!

I can’t believe that about the Chobani. I didn’t know it was an ongoing problem. I had a pineapple flavor that was bloated too and I threw it away. Kinda scary.

I’ve never done a cleanse so I didn’t know the juices can irritate your stomach. I guess that’s why it’s good to just eat a well rounded diet and take good care of yourself so that you don’t have to do a cleanse!

Blue Print does make a really good Pineapple Mint juice though! I drink it just to drink- not to cleanse.

That event looks like a blast. I hope your photo wins! I voted for you. 🙂

I agree with you on the balanced diet idea! I’ve had the BP juices before when I was not being forced to refrain from eating and they did not bother my stomach so I guess it’s just an empty stomach thing. Thanks for voting for me! 🙂

Ugh, that’s so crazy to hear about the Chobani issue. When you hear of recalls, you naturally assume that the ones you bought are okay! At least I do. Lol I think you just reinforced that I should pay more attention to recalls and check my products just in case. I would have eaten all the yogurt and not understood why I felt bad!

      September 8, 2013

I know! I think I only noticed because I actually had an article pop up on my bloglovin feed. Otherwise I would have continued to eat it like you said.

I am 100% with you on this entire post! I think Chobani could have been a lot more proactive and responsible for something they clearly knew was going on!! I found out about it on freakin FB! I also agree with cleanses – I never have done one and I always advise friends against them, unless of course they have to do it for medical reasons like you did. I’ve also been having stomach issues lately and it tuns out that I’ve become allergic to certain shellfish! It’s such a nightmare. I can’t eat lobster or crab – at all. SO depressing. Lastly, I so wish I could come to the city and do the 10K. Sounds like it’s going to be a great race for a great cause.

I know! I was so irritated that I found out only a couple of hours after I finished my yogurt! Not cool. I don’t think I would really do a juice cleanse but I thought I would give the juice a go while I was fasting. Never again! I can’t believe you have developed an allergy to shellfish! That seems so strange to develop it as an adult. I love lobster AND crab! 🙁 Maybe it will be a temporary allergy?

I had no idea about the chobani recall! Chobani is banned in Canada (some issues with the dairy farmers in Canada) so I’m sort of out of the loop. Good to know though and I’ll be sure to warn my friends and family in the States.

I just read the posts on your brother. My Dad was diagnosed with colon cancer 4 years ago and went through some extensive surgeries and chemo. It was a hard time for my family (my Mom had received a breast cancer diagnosis 6 months prior) but he as well as my family came out stronger. It’s definitely my main motivation behind living a healthy and active lifestyle. But then again so much of it is out of our control. 27 is so young. I hope he and your family are doing well. Just wanted to let you know if you ever want to talk to someone who understands I am always here 🙂 Have a wonderful weekend my dear!

Davida, thank you so much for your kind words. I really hope your family is doing well these days. My brother was very fortunate to have caught it early and is doing extremely well. Chemo was hard on him and his wife but luckily those days are behind them now. It’s so important to be proactive with these things. I appreciate all your kind thoughts and I wish you the best!

Oh man, that sucks that you ate the recalled yogurt! Yikes! Looks like you had quite the week for tummy issues! As soon as I ready about the recall yesterday, I went home right away to check mine out and luckily the numbers didn’t match. Well, I hope your stomach is starting to feel better!

I hope you don’t get sick from the Chobani! I heard about the recall on the news and was worried about getting sick myself.

Back in the days of trying to lose weight quickly, I tried a few juice cleanses. While I didn’t have stomach irritation (stomach of steal here!), I was often light headed and dizzy. Not good! I’ll be sticking with solid food and the occasional juice from now on.

    • FitBritt
      September 8, 2013

Totally agree with you Jillienne! I didn’t realize the juice could make you sick! I would not normally do a “cleanse” or at least not with just juice, it just so happened that I was not allowed to eat at all so I thought I would kind of try out the juices. Never again! I didn’t get sick from the Chobani but I was really worried!

Ugh, that’s no fun discovering your chobani recalled! The event looked fun though! I’m not really a runner but I do run for causes. I don’t train or anything, kinda just go out there and wing it 🙂

I didn’t find out about the Chobani recall until just the other day. Once I heard, I remember seeing a worker at the grocery store going through all the Chobani and pulling it off the shelf which I thought was curious. The thing is, this happened to me about 2 years ago when I had a bunch of Chobani that was fizzing and tasted off. The first time around I just put it off as a bad couple of containers but this has me thinking more. And I love Chobani! Looks like you all had a great time at the espnW event. Sad that I missed it!

I love Chobani too! I hope they can rectify whatever issues they are having because it’s so unfortunate when something like this happens.

OMG I can’t believe the Chobani recall… hadn’t heard of it yet so thanks for filling me in!! I felt horribly nauseous a few days recently (which is really uncommon for me), and looking at MyFitnessPal, I see that it was on days I had eaten a Chobani. And I have more of the recalled yogurt in my fridge, so thank you for saving me from more stomach aches! That really is disappointing to me too… I adore Chobani and now I just feel a little grossed out. Yuck!

    Anywayssss, enjoy your weekend! 🙂

      September 8, 2013

That is really terrible! See, I wish they had told everyone sooner so you didn’t have to eat it! I’m just glad you didn’t get too sick from it! Hope you had a good (yogurt-free) weekend! 🙂

    September 7, 2013

I have to limit my dairy so I’d be okay with not eating the yogurt. However, I do agree with you about Chobani being more proactive about the issues.

I’ve had the same procedure so I’ve done the whole thing. Not fun but sometimes necessary.

That sounds like a fun event!

I ate one of those bad Chobani’s too. Funny, two days before the recall I had just asked via Twitter if bloating was a sign of spoilage and then the recall notice came out. Crazy! Glad they’re taking them off the shelves though. Sorry you were sick though.

Hope your procedure went well and good for you for being proactive and checking yourself out. My friend’s mother was diagnosed with colon cancer last Thanksgiving and it’s been a bit hellish.

I’m sad to be missing the FEED10K and hope they get an event going in LA!

Hoping your elbow is doing ok as well!

I’m really sorry to hear about your friend’s mother. Luckily my brother is doing incredibly well. Unfortunately, it is likely a genetic issue since he got it so young. My procedure was clear though! What response did you get about the bloating?
