Hello friends! Welcome to my third stop on this whirlwind trip of Cali! In case you missed Palm Springs and Laguna, you can catch up here and here. In the meantime, let’s move on to our third stop along the way. . . BIG SUR! The Hubs had the opportunity to visit Big Sur last year but I couldn’t because of work. Ever since then I’ve been dying to check it out and luckily I had my chance earlier this month. If you have never been to Big Sur, you are missing out in a major way. The drive is unbelievable. Waaaaaaay back in the old days, the Hubs (who has then just the Boyfriend) and I drove the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. This drive reminded me of that but it had it’s own special California flair and wasn’t nearly as windy or cold.
I’ll let the photos do most of the talking but I’ll set the scene by saying we left early in the day while the fog was still clinging to the hills and casting a grayish hue on the ocean. It didn’t stop us from cruising to our first stop and seeing these:
SEALS! Hundreds of them. They were napping, playing and making a ton of noise. My favorite is the picture at the bottom right where they are hugging. So cute.
Have you ever seen mist like this!?!?
The views were spectacular but the road was full of so many twists and turns!
We stopped at this really cool spot that had actually been destroyed by falling rock and this waterfall that used to fall onto rocks now falls directly onto the beach! You can see it to the right in the photos below.
I just love that green-blue water color!
We also stopped to check out this really cool bridge!
Readers, have you ever been to Big Sur? Do you enjoy road trips? Where’s the coolest place you’ve ever been?
I’ve never been to big sur but I would love to go one day! I’ve done that drive down the coast but it was too rainy and cloudy to stop at Big Sur. Not a huge fan of road trips thanks to the overdose my family inflicted on me as a child. 4 kids plus the parents were wayyyyy too many bodies in such a tight space!
I have been to Big Sur, and I also loved it! Ah yes, the roads are SO twisty and turn-y — it’s so beautiful but I got a little carsick haha My hubby and I went horseback riding through a park and ended up riding on the beach – it was pretty cool!
Wow, what a beautiful place! I love that BLUE water and the seals are amazing! It almost seems sur-real (pardon the pun!) It actually reminds me of some places I’ve been to in Maine. I <3 the lighthouse and that mist!
I’ve driven that way myself but it was many years ago! How gorgeous!!! Those views are really just stunning. I could drive those winding roads all day. Thank you for the gorgeous pictures! It brings back a lot of memories…and one “bucket list” item. Someday I would love to run the Big Sur marathon. It’s pretty coveted in the running world and I’m sure you can see why!
