Tone It Up With Karena and Katrina in Beach Babe 2!

Hi friends!  Hope you are having an amazing week!  Temperatures have really plummeted here and I am feeling the chill.  If you know me at all, you know I love warm weather.  Well, I like to channel the warm weather with my workouts and so you can imagine how excited I was to try out Tone It Up (TIU) Beach Babe 2 DVD (affiliate link).  I stumbled across TIU awhile back and I love their SoCal lifestyle infused into their workouts.  I decided to buy their DVD and see if they live up the hype.
The DVD was filmed in Hawaii (where the Hubs and I got married!).  My favorite part of the DVD is the background.  The ladies, Karena and Katrina, film all of their workouts on the beach and I loved watching the waves crash in the background (and a random surfer photo bomb occasionally) as I worked up a sweat.

Beach Babe 2 has two discs with nine different workouts:

1.) Set the Bar- This 20 minute “workout” is meant to measure your progress.  You do this workout first and then complete it again throughout the program to see how far you’ve improved.  I actually really like this concept, especially if you are new to fitness.  It is like having your own personal trainer.

2.) HIIT the Beach- This 40 minute workout is the longest workout in the series and it is the only cardio workout.  I love HIIT workouts because they are fast and effective.  The ladies walk you through several rounds of circuits that include HIIT cardio moves and some toning moves.  I worked up a sweat in this workout but as far as HIIT workouts go, it is not the hardest one I’ve ever done.  I would recommend this if you are new to HIIT workouts.

3.)  Beach Barre- You know I love my barre classes and the beach is my favorite place ever so barre on the beach is the best thing ever!  I love the barre focus here and although it is not as hard as some of my beloved barre dvds, this was one of my favorites in the set! 30 minutes

4.) Fine Toning-  This 20 minute class focuses on toning up your smaller muscle groups.   It was a barre type feel as well and I like it but I would do it with another workout like some cardio.

 TIU 2

5.) Sunrise Routine- This routine is gentle and perfect for when you are just waking up.   I have to say that I enjoyed playing this in the morning when I normally workout.  I am sometimes so tired that my usual workouts seem really intense.  This was a great way to wake up.  But, by the same time, if I did this everyday, I probably wouldn’t see toning results I want. 25 minutes

6.) Sunset Stretch- This 15 minute stretch is one of my favorites because it perfect for stretching after a workout.  I sometimes skip stretching because I am not motivated or I don’t know what I want to do.  This is a great workout to pop in and quickly stretch to get the kinks out and maintain flexibility.  I love the calming feeling of this DVD.

7.) Bikini Arms- This 20 minute workout really does make the arms burn!

8.) Hula Booty- 25 minutes long, this workout is good for targeting the booty and does get your heart rate up.

9.) Sunkissed Abs- This 18 minute workout is pretty challenging and involves a lot of planks.  I actually like pairing this workout with Bikini Arms and Hula Booty for a total body workout.

TIU 3

Overall I though the DVD was gorgeous but not very challenging for someone who is already in good shape.  I think the workouts are perfect add ons if you are a runner or cyclists looking to add some toning into the mix.  The TIU ladies are really selling their SoCal lifestyle, which I think is what makes it so appealing to me.  I have not tried TIU Beach Babe DVD 1 (affiliate link), but I have a feeling it would be similar!  I hope their third DVD is more challenging because I’m sold on their branding!

Readers, have you ever wanted to love a DVD but it didn’t quite live up to your expectations?  Have you tried TIU before?  Does anyone want to move to SoCal with me!?

I honestly feel like I would probably get so distracted by the beautiful backdrop that I would wind up missing the exercises! ;)-Ashley

I actually find their workouts hard! But I usually do them a few times through. I’ve never tried out their DVD though so maybe it’s different. And how could you not be sold on two beautiful girls smiling while working out on a beach? haha

I’ve never really done their YouTube workouts. These workouts were good but I thought you needed to combine them to get a challenging workout or do them with some cardio. I liked them but for $40 I wanted a little bit more of a challenge or maybe some faster pacing.

I am a TIU fan but I agree with you, more so of the SOCal lifestyle and the clean eating recipes. I don’t find the workouts to be intense or difficult enough, but for someone just starting out they would probably be perfect. I considered buying the DVDs but I figured if they were like their weekly workouts it wouldn’t be worth it, personally. But definitely move over here..west is best!!

Those girls are marketing geniuses. I have tried some of their workouts but follow them more to understand the marketing aspects. I tend not to buy a lot of DVDs anymore but borrow through Netflix. If I don’t like something I can send it right back.

As you may have picked up on, I’m in love with SoCal! 🙂

These girls have been everywhere these days (and rightly so, they’re both gorgeous with awesome bodies!). I knew about them a few years back before I feel like they broke into the mainstream health industry, but I don’t think I’ve ever actually done any of their workouts before. Thanks for sharing your review.

And yes, I often feel like workout DVDs and classes are not challenging enough!

I have done a few of their YouTube workouts and feel the same way. Their workouts are better for fine toning rather than building muscle, especially the leg exercises.

I hear you about the cold weather! It has been freezing in California as well…nothing like New York though. I’m flying there in January and so worried about the snow/rain! It’s like I have to build a new wardrobe.

I agree with thedoseofreality as I too would be so enthralled with the Hawaiian backdrop.

I haven’t tried it, actually never heard of them but I applaud their branding efforts. Seems that it’s working. I will have to tune in to them.

I love these girls! I can’t wait for the reality show to come on Bravo. Do you need a lot equipment for these DVDs?

I’ve been wanting to try the TIU DVD’s but I don’t think they would be quite challenging enough for me either. I also like to eat a lot… which means I need to sweat a lot 😉

I found out about these ladies when their TV show aired. I went onto their website and started doing their video workouts that were available at no cost online. I have been a runner for 30 years and these workouts are the perfect compliment to my running and Pilates and other workouts/routines that I use to accompany the running. I’ve recently gotten into trail running, and the leg/lower body workouts have definitely helped me when I have to run up and down those steep mountains in the woods (hahaha….). I considered buying their DVDs, but I can access so many of their workouts at no cost that I find it easy to pick and choose and vary my workouts throughout the week.

Hi, can you explane how the Set The Bar workout looks like?
Here ( is a worksheet. But can you explane how long every exercise takes? And do you have to count how many you do?
PLEASE give me a little bit more explanation. I need to do this in the TIU Love your body series, but I don’t have the DVD and I’m not able to buy it.

Hi, can you please give me a little bit more explanation about the Set The Bar workout?
Here’s a worksheet (, but there’s no explanation on it.
How long do you have to do each exercise on the worksheet? And do you need to count how many reps you can do?
I need this information because I’m following the TIU Love your body series, but I don’t own this DVD and I’m not able to buy it.
    Thank you
