Birthday Weekend on Vieques, Puerto Rico

Hello my friends!  I’m back today with a fun little recap of my long weekend in Vieques, Puerto Rico (pronounced vee-eh-keys).  I’ve mentioned before that the Hubs has been working in Mexico for the last year plus.  It started out as 6 weeks in January 2013 and here we are in February 2014.  My favorite part of the day is when he gets home from work and we have dinner together so obviously having him in Mexico everyday is no fun.  But, the good thing is all the flights back and forth and nights at the W Hotel Mexico City mean that we have racked up a lot of points and that means a free vacation!!  So since Friday was Vday and Monday was Bday, we decided to take the long weekend and head south for some warmer weather.

We flew out on Thursday night, which was an absolute miracle since there was a huge snowstorm. I don’t know how but we somehow managed to make it out on time.  Almost everyone else we spoke to in Puerto Rico had a problem with their flight.  But luckily we managed to get out with no problems!  Vieques is actually about a 23 minute flight from the mainland Puerto Rico so we spent one really short night at the Sheraton Puerto Rico.  Because the Hubs has about 8 million Starwood points, he gets automatic upgrades if they are available so we got upgraded to a suite when we checked in.  It was pretty awesome!  I almost wanted to stay but the beach was calling!

Plus the hotel gave me a nice little birthday cheesecake.  Score!

Early Friday morning we packed up and headed to the airport for the short flight to Vieques.  We took Cape Air, which is a small Cessna plane.  It was actually so much fun!  I got to sit in the co-pilot seat because of my extremely short legs!  It was kind of hard not to touch all the buttons.  Side note- I can never actually be a pilot because I couldn’t see over the dash board.  But the flight gave us some great views of the islands!

We arrived at the W Hotel in Vieques and I was completely blown away.  The resort was absolutely amazing and I couldn’t believe we got to stay here for free!  We checked into our room which had this amazingly huge shower and a big old tub!  The views out to the water were so nice and I could hear the waves crashing on the shore at night, which is my heaven!

We got some welcome chocolates when we checked in.

The Hubs obviously thought the massive shower was really cool!  They had spotlights in there so when you looked up at the ceiling you could see the water hitting the floor making these really cool patterns.  So neat.

I just couldn’t get over how gorgeous the island is and there was so much to do!

We headed out on stand up paddleboards and actually saw a sea turtle!!!  We also did a lot of kayaking to random little beaches along the shore.  You could just kayak or SUP from one beach to the next.

We actually kayaked to this island directly off the shore that we nicknamed “ferry island” because the first day it was hazy and we couldn’t tell if the mass was a ferry or land!  Haha.  Definitely land!  It is surrounded by coral reef so we kayaked out for about 40 minutes until we reached the island and then went snorkeling.  It was so amazing and we were the only people there!

I found these shells on our snorkeling trip.

I was super excited that the W had some great tennis courts so the Hubs and I could get outside and play.

Of course we found some time in our busy schedules to relax a bit too!

Although the W resort was beautiful, we also wanted to venture off the resort to see the rest of the island so we headed to the Caribbean side to Caracas beach.  It was a very busy beach but so beautiful and with some really fun waves for body surfing.  Plus I saw a cool crab and an iguana!

I actually had the Hubs video some of his body surfing in the waves.  We thought it was so cool until the GoPro fell off his head into the water.  I thought it was gone!!  We found it 10 minutes later in the water.  The best part was that it was recording the whole time it was lost at sea!  The footage was absolutely wild.  If was really kind of freaking and then hilarious at the end when the Hubs pulled it out of the water and said “We found you!”.

In the evenings we relaxed by the fire pit and enjoyed some yummy cocktails and really good food!

The whole trip definitely exceeded my expectations and I was so happy to get away from this dreary weather we’ve been having for a bit!

I made this short video of all the fun things we did on the trip, including the turtle, which appears at about 50 seconds!

Readers, what’s the coolest thing you’ve ever seen in the water?  Has a trip ever exceeded your expectations?  Did you do anything fun over the long weekend?

Britt you gotta stop visiting beaches and not inviting me…The only place I’ve travelled to in the last year besides NYC and Montreal is Minnesota. Surprisingly the cabin in nowheresville ended up being a fabulous trip, but I’d still take the beach!

Those pictures of the beach look incredible. The video was fun – I was sort of dancing along to the fun tunes!!
    Aren’t those GoPro cameras awesome??
Listening to waves crash on the beach is my favorite sound – I need that in my life more often!!

Oh, wow…that looks incredible. One of my best friends is from Puerto Rico & has been trying to get me to go there with him for years. It’s on my bucket list, but I haven’t made it there yet. The beach & that pool looks incredibly relaxing. Looks like you had a great time!

Absolutely breathtaking as usual! Man, it’s awesome that all of that was off rewards. Super score. Loved that picture of the hubs in the shower.

I think I would have been a bit afraid of riding in the co-pilots seat.

Love the photos + video. The husband and I love taking videos when we are away… normally they are extremely corny and ridiculous, but we love looking back on them.

You’re killing me here!!! I’m looking outside to horrid gray skies and freezing rain. Last year, when I was in Grand Cayman, I swam with and kissed a sting ray – that was cool and slightly scary!

It looks like you had a great vday/bday weekend! 🙂

Oh my goshhhh your trip looks like so much fun!! When I was in Puerto Rico last year I didn’t stray far from San Juan, but Vieques Beach looks beautiful! So glad you were able to get away for a bit.

Did I just die and go to heaven?!

Aw man, I just snapped out of it. I guess I didn’t die and go to heaven, I just was looking at all your PHENOMENAL photos! This looks like a DREAMMMMMMMMM especially since you flew out during a SNOW STORM! You’re so lucky you didn’t have delays up the WAZOOOOOO!! I am always the “lucky” one who has to deal with that. Clearly the universe wanted you to have a fantastic Valentine’s Day and Birthday and it’s quite obvious that YOU DID!

This looks a perfect getaway for you and your man!! The hotels look beautiful and welcome chocolates always get a thumbs up in my book. OMG at the GoPro getting lost! You were probably having a little heart attack looking for it, but I’m glad you found it! Glad you got to escape the polar vortex for awhile 🙂 And PS – Ever since I found out that your hubby is from Australia, I always picture him having this cute Aussie accent whenever you post pictures/tell stories of him hahaha
