New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show

Hi all!!  Hope you had a fabulous weekend!  The weather here was fantastic!  Even better, we had a ton of fun plans including dinner at a friend’s house and a rooftop birthday party for a friend’s child.  But the major highlight of the weekend was visiting the New York Botanical Garden for the first time to see the Orchid Show called Key West Contemporary.

The show was held in this beautiful atrium that was actually very large, like a museum.

When we walked in, we were greeted with these amazing orchid structures perched over a tranquil pond.  We knew we would be in for a treat!

One of my favorite parts of the show were the extremely vibrant colors.  I loved looking at the majestic magentas and deep purples.

Even orange and yellow were popular colors for the many varieties of orchids here.

Did you know there are over 30,000 different types of orchids?  They grow on every continent except Antarctica.

Some varieties reminded me of insects, like spiders.

In fact, orchids actually try to mimic insects to attract them so the insects will mate with the plants and they can reproduce.  Insane, right!?

There were way more than just orchids at the show.  We saw beautiful lilly pads in this amazing, serene pond.

We also saw this amazing jade vine that was totally unreal looking!

And of course lots of tropical foliage!

The entire place was so peaceful and everything smelled delicious!

Readers, have you ever been to a flower show?  What’s your favorite flower?  What did you do this weekend?

What a beautiful orchid show. That is worth a trip to NYC just to see that! This weekend I worked a bit on my hydrangeas which bloom into beautiful blue pom-pom flowers in June and last until the fall frosts because they are an everlasting variety.

I love the botanical gardens! Wish I could have seen the orchid show. I was there for the Monet show a few years ago and it was gorgeous! Such a spectacular place.

I bet the Monet show was amazing! I really liked the gardens although outside of the show, the rest of the gardens were still pretty dead!

That is just gorgeous – all of it! I cannot get over that Jade vine. It definitely looks like it’s made of plastic. What a cool experience. I’ve never been to a flower show or a botanical garden…except in Vegas, but I’m not sure that counts since it was in the lobby of the Bellagio! It was pretty amazing though..

The Jade vine was super cool! There were so many exotic plants I had never seen before. I’m not huge into flowers or gardening but I do appreciate looking at pretty things!

Every plant I have ever bought or received as a gift has died. Orchids-killed them twice. Bonsai tree- dead within a few months. I am hopeless!

So beautiful! I wish this happened when I was in NYC. We have a similar sort of thing at the Conservatory of Flowers every year and it is one of my favorite things to look at.

My favorite is the jade vine, amazing.

Simply gorgeous! I have been to the flower shows at the Hartford convention centers. My mom in law is an amazing gardener and talented flower arranger. Her gardens are stunning. She would love something like this!

Wow how beautiful! I have been to Botanical Gardens in D.C. and it was amazing….I won’t say I’m a huge flower and garden person but it really was beautiful. I can’t believe there are that many different kinds of orchids…that’s nuts!

I had no idea either! I am only familiar with the traditionally popular ones. We had orchids at our wedding and I just loved them so I was excited when I saw this show advertised!
