Food & Fitness: Summer of Fitness Round 2

Hi friends!  We made it to another Friday!  Any exciting plans for the weekend?  I’ve got some fun things on the menu.  More about that below.  Welcome to this week’s edition of Food & Fitness!

I’m finally getting into the swing of cooking things again!  During my first trimester I felt too sick and was too tired at night to make good food.  I would get so stressed for Friday’s Food & Fitness because I normally had nothing to show for the week!  I hoped I managed to fool you guys! 🙂

Cinco de mayo 1

I started the week with a little Cinco de Mayo feast.  Chicken burritos, homemade guac and plantain chips.  It was my first time making plantain chips and I absolutely loved them!  They were so much easier to make than I thought.  I’ll definitely be making these again.

I made this tomato soup with gruyere toasts after seeing them in cooking light.  Don’t you think my soup looks like the photo!?  Ok, maybe the light at 9:30 pm isn’t ideal for food photography…or the hangriness of waiting that long to eat!  But the soup was delicious!

Last year I proclaimed 2013 to be the Summer of Fitness but I think 2014 is going to give 2013 a run for its money.  There are so many crazy good events coming up this year and I’m so excited for them!  To name a few:

A Healthy U Conference– Hosted by a few of my favorite bloggers: Kimberly from Manifest Yourself, Nellie from Brooklyn Active Mama and Cassandre from Losing in the City.  The event is tomorrow and it is SOLD OUT!  It’s going to be amazing with some great speakers, healthy snacks, fitness and tons of awesome people!

Levo League netWORKOUT–  My first netWORKOUT as workout Chairman for Levo League is planned for next Wednesday!  We are partnering with Equinox for a Tabata workout.  Local ladies, this is a *free* event and the perfect opportunity to meet other working professionals in NYC.  You can sign up here!  Hope to see you there! 🙂

lole white

Lole White Tour– So excited to be participating in this event this year.  I can’t remember if last year they didn’t come to NYC or I didn’t get a chance to go, but I remember wanting to participate so I was thrilled when I was able to sign up this year!  Essentially, it is a massive yoga class being held at the MoMA and everyone has to wear white.  I got some white capris (from Lole, of course) but I’m a little nervous how they are going to look on my big preggo booty!

Yoga in Bryant Park– A summer staple is back!!  I love these outdoor free yoga classes every Thursday!  In fact, the yoga photo in my Food & Fitness logo was taken at last year’s Bryant Park yoga.  This year the yoga classes are being sponsored by Athleta and YogaWorks.

Downward Dog 2 in Times Square

Solstice in Times Square– What better way to celebrate the summer solstice than a yoga class in the middle of ones of the busiest places on earth?  You bet I’ll be there again this year!

Plus so much more!  Stay tuned for updates and recaps all summer long!  It’s going to be one fit summer!

In other news, Soul Cycle made headlines recently when an NYC fitness instructor tweeted that he was banned from the studio.  This tweet brought to light the fairly common practice of boutique fitness studios banning fitness instructors from taking classes at their studio in an effort to protect their intellectual property and reduce competition.  What do you guys think of this?

Personally, I think its kind of cheap.  I think that the industry as a whole benefits from sharing knowledge, information and experiences.  When you visit a studio you are going there because you enjoy the workout method, you like the instructors and the overall atmosphere appeals to you.  Even if an instructor goes in and observes all these things, there is no perfect formula that will guarantee that instructor can recreate it.  Plus, I think banning instructors creates unnecessary animosity.  I’ve had some issues with Soul Cycle for awhile now but this is kind of icing on the cake for me.

Readers, anyone going to Healthy U tomorrow?  What do you think of the instructor ban?  What workouts are you looking forward to this summer?

I love the idea of doing yoga outdoors! I was doing yoga for a while, then I stopped and I definitely want to get back into it again. In fact, I’m planning on taking a pre-natal yoga class on Sunday! I’m so excited for it!

Oh awesome! You’ll have to let me know how you like it. I signed up for YogaGlo because they have a ton of prenatal classes online, which is really convenient to do at home!

I definitely need to check out YogaGlo! It sounds really great, and yes, I loved the prenatal yoga class I went to yesterday. It’s definitely worth it! I’ll be writing more about it on the blog in the near future. 🙂

I’m looking forward to incorporating more swimming into my weeks. Mix things up, plus it’s supposed to feel really good the farther along in pregnancy you get.

I’ve heard that from one of my mom friends. I actually live across the street from a pool but it is really expensive ($35 per visit!).

Your tomato soup looks fabulous! Sounds like a great way to use summer tomatoes.

I’ve been doing kettle bell workouts lately and really love the results I’ve been getting. That will likely continue as my go-to workout this summer!

You have so many great options for some fun summer workouts!!
I would have loved to go to Nellie’s event but distance and other factors made that impossible. Plus, tomorrow is my big race so I will be running while y’all are all at the fun event!!

I’ll be at AHU! 🙂 And I really like some of those events. I really want to get into yoga now that I will be NYC based. There are always such great deals. Maybe I’ll be able to join you one day.

Those events DO look awesome – so fun! And for the record >>> totally fooled!

Oh good! That makes me feel better!

I love participating in these group events. I feed off of the energy!

You already know my answer to that first question! Can’t wait to meet up!!
Other then my little trip to Spain, I don’t have any fun fitness plans this summer – other then being on Team HMF (Hartford Marathon Foundation) and running lots of races!!

I can’t wait to hear about HealthyU from you. It will be fun to hear about it from both perspectives. The free Yoga classes sound fun. We have free Yoga under the Arch in STL every Saturday but I live way out in the boonies so it’s a little to far. But would be fun for some sweet blogging pictures just once.

I think if they don’t want the instructor taking their class ideas then they should have him sign a confidentiality agreement. Then he can enjoy the class and they have what they need. Plus it’s a spin class. How much different can it be than other classes?

I agree a confidentiality agreement would be preferable, but I think it would be difficult to enforce. Honestly, I just think that it’s bad sportsmanship and fear that others can do it better.

You’re so lucky to have lots of great events ! Take advantage of them ! ps – your soup does look like the photo, looks yummy.

      Thanks Karen!

I know we won’t live in NYC forever so I want to take advantage of every second!

Oooooh I want plantain chips right now!

Sounds like you’re going to some great fitness events this summer!! You’re inspiring me to get more involved in going to fun fitness things this summer as well once I move and get settled in. I got invited to workout at a high altitude training facility next week, so I’m looking forward to that!

Ooo I can’t wait to hear about the high altitude training facility! I’ve never heard of anything like that before!

Banning people from studios is ridiculous. You should be able to work out wherever you want, especially if you’re paying for it. Fitness instructor or not.

Yoga outdoors rocks and I don’t even love yoga. That picture of Times Square is crazy! I couldn’t even imagine doing yoga with that many people in such an iconic place. I saw your tweet about the instructor. That is horrible! People should be supporting each other not immediately jumping to the potential bad. It frustrates me. Build people up people, don’t shut them down!

It’s pretty cool! It’s bizarre that you are in the busiest place on earth and everything is so calm and zen!
