First Tri Recap

No, not that kind of tri. Although, if you want to read the recap of my first triathlon, just check  it out here! For those of you not totally bored to death by baby stuff, read on!  (Warning:  ultrasoud photos ahead!).

When we first found out we were expecting Baby Bendall, he or she was the size of a poppy seed.  A tiny, little poppy seed.  And ever since then, we have been referring to the babe as the poppy seed.  This week the baby is the size of a lime!  So big!  We had our first trimester ultrasound last week and could see the baby’s arms, legs, brain, spine, nose and heart.  It is becoming a real baby!  I’ve actually had two ultrasounds recently and in the first one, the little poppy seed was moving around so much we couldn’t get a clear photo.  Arms were in the air waving “Hi Mom!”.  I think it was doing baby Zumba.  ðŸ™‚

 

Weight gained:  I don’t know!  I’ve asked my doctor not to tell me unless there is a problem.  I know it’s probably weird but I’m having a hard time accepting the weight thing.  I’ve been the same size my whole adult life so this is a huge change for me.  Judge away.

Workouts:  Going good!  The beginning was a bit tough because I was so tired all the time but now I’m managing to keep up with the frequency of the workouts just not the intensity.  I have to take things a little bit easy and watch my heart rate.  Before pregnancy my heart rate would be between 170-180s bpm.  Now I’m usually between 150-160 bpms.  When I hit the 170s I get pretty tired.  I’ve been keeping up with my Zumba, yoga, barre classes and BodyPump.

Symptoms:  I had some bad morning sickness the first trimester but I think I’m beginning to pull out of it.  I have a lot more good days than bad days and I can even get through a whole day now without feeling sick.  I’m still pretty tired and fatigued most of the time, which is partly due to the fact that I am sleeping terribly!!  I fall asleep right away and then wake up after a few hours.  I often can’t fall back asleep and will just lie there.  Or I have really vivid dreams and then wake up totally bugged out!  Itchy skin!  My skin is SO ITCHY!  Sorry, I had to yell because it is so uncomfortable!

Food Aversions:  Changes daily.  Some days certain things sound really good to me and others…not so much.  I’m getting back into veggies, which I hated most of my first trimester.  I’m kind off meat though except chicken.  Also, no seafood.  Somebody made fish one day for lunch at the office and I had half a mind to hunt them down.

Food Cravings:  I go through phases with this as well but generally:

  • Sweet potatoes/ sweet potato fries.
  • Guacamole.
  • Anything salty like chips or pretzels.
  • Carbs- loving pizza and pasta!
  • Anything sweet, especially my very special Starbust lollies that came to me all the way from Australia.  You can’t buy them here and they are the best.  Now I have to figure out how to make them last . . .
  • Lemonade

Maternity Clothes:  I’m still wearing my regular clothes although I did break out my maternity skinny jeans the other day after spending an entire day sitting in my regular skinny jeans and feeling like my circulation was being cut off.  Short sitting bursts or standing is ok but long term forget it.  I’ve bought a bunch of cute things though that I’ll be sharing with you soon.

Stretch Marks:  None that I’m aware of.  I’ve been using stretch mark cream and oil for weeks now.  My husband thinks I’m crazy.

Sleep:  See above.  So awful.  If I wake up only once and manage to fall asleep in under 20 minutes that is a good night.  A bad night is waking up and not falling back asleep at all or falling asleep about 45 minutes before my alarm goes off.  If you tell me to sleep now because when the baby comes I won’t sleep, I will slap you.  I have bags the size of a small country under my eyes.

Gender:  Boy.  Or girl.  Ha.  We don’t know yet!  I ask the Hubs pretty much every day what he thinks we are having.  It goes something like this:

Me:  “Do you think it’s a boy or girl?”

Him:  “Boy.”

Me:  “Ok.  We should agree on a name.”

The next day …

Me:  “What do you think: boy or girl?”

Him:  “What did I say yesterday?”

Me:  “Boy.”

Him:  “Ok.  Girl then.”

Hahaha.  I’m so impatient.

Looking Forward To:  Feeling awesome!  The first trimester was so rough.  I won’t lie, there were a few tears because no matter what I did, I couldn’t make myself feel better.  But things are getting better slowly and I am actually beginning to enjoy the journey a bit more now.

Baby Items Purchased: Three things:  

  • A onesie that was a joke to the Hubs.
  • Swaddling blankets.  Also a gift for the Hubs because we celebrated our cotton anniversary this year.
  • These flip flops, which were not as gender neutral as I was hoping.

    The first trimester stinks, doesn’t it!?! It’s so hard! There were definitely some days when I felt so icky that I thought I feel like that forever. At least you (and I) are having more good days now!

    So, I’m 100% with you on the weight gain! I’ve been having trouble in that area too and I don’t even want to know what I’ve gained. I try to tell myself to just get over it – that that’s what supposed to happen and that I it’s not permanent, but it’s still really hard nonetheless. Sigh!

    My skin is also super itchy! I’ve been using lotion non-stop and have to slather it on as soon as I get out of the shower.

      Oh my gosh! I’m glad I’m not the only one with itchy skin. It is the worst! Even with all the lotion and oil I use, I still can’t wear certain pants because they cause me to itch like crazy!

    Ha I totally thought you spontaneously did a tri while pregnant and I was like damnnnnnn girl! I think I’ll be the same way when it comes to pregnancy and weight gain. I don’t weight myself now (nor have I for a couple of years) and I just think it would mess with me if I started to while pregnant. We shall see….hopefully in a while from now lol

      Oh man! No way! My doctor specifically said no training for races!

      Yeah, even when I don’t weight myself I still get harassed about it at other appointments (for instance, ultrasound appointments and blood tests are referred out to other places) because they want to know so bad. One technician guessed my weight and I almost started to cry. Oh well. It is worth it in the end.

    I remember when a friend of my husband’s asked me what morning sickness felt like – I told him it felt a lot like a hangover without the drinking part – and it was not just in the morning – all day!! Your energy should start to come back soon if you can sleep more – do you have a body pillow? Sometimes that helps make your tiny baby bump and legs more comfortable.

      I totally agree about the hangover analogy! It’s the worst feeling. I’m definitely starting to feel better now. At least I only feel sick every so often instead of every day.

      I do not have a body pillow yet but I’ve heard good things. Is there a particular brand you think is good?

    You look amazing! I predict a sweet baby Girl. Have you done the ring on a necklace swing over your belly? Supposedly based on which direction it swirls it will predict a boy/girl.

    I totally thought triathlon at first, haha! I’m looking forward to these posts. Don’t worry about the weight – like I said before, this is the best kind of weight to gain and if you keep it healthy, you’ll lose it in no time afterward!

      Ha! No triathlons for me anytime soon! Although I’m thinking of doing something crazy like that after the baby is born as a way to motivate myself to move forward and get back into the swing of things. I don’t know. Ask me in seven months and I’ll probably say I was delirious when I wrote this.

    Hmmm…I predict girl, but I am notoriously bad at guessing, so you’re most likely having a boy! So happy you’re getting over the nausea – that was the worst part of first trimester when I was preggo. I agree with Kim – it was just like being constantly hungover, without having had the wine!

      Totally agree on the hangover analogy, It is the worst! But, in all honestly, I thought it was going to be much much worse than it actually was!

    So many changes – ah, pregnancy. I haven’t gone through it but I’ve definitely become as familiar with it as one can be without actually being pregnant! It definitely seems rough, but you get the best prize ever at the end. 🙂

    You’re so cute, you have no bump yet and I’m predicting that you’ll be all tiny everywhere else as usual and then have a baby belly popping out! I don’t blame you on the weight thing. Just keep doing what you’re doing and I’m sure you’ll gain a healthy amount of weight, half of which will automatically come off when you give you birth….and I’m predicting boy…?! Wait, girl. No wait, BOY!

      Aww thanks Nicole! I’m really trying to stay active and healthy and not just give in to the mindset of “I’m pregnant so anything goes!”.

      I love getting all the predictions! I have no idea! I am dyyyyyying to find out!

    I’m so so happy for you! You look amazing and are doing so awesome keeping up with your workouts.
    I don’t think there’s anything wrong with not wanting to know about the weight gain. In fact, I like that idea. It allows you to really focus on how you feel rather than a number.

    Baby Bendall already looks so cute! I can’t wait to read more about the second trimester.

      Thanks Sarah! I’m definitely trying to focus more on how I feel than arbitrary numbers. It helps get into the right mindset! Plus, if I’m happy then the baby is happy!

    So exciting, enjoy every minute of it. I LOVED being pregnant. Felt great, was not sick, only tired.

    OMG that is one ultrasound that I CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE BABY IN! AHHHHH HA HA HA! It would be really pathetic if I couldn’t! LMFAO!

    And MAN…. Chicken is just amazing. I have cravings for it like I am pregnant 😉 If/when I get pregnant in the LONG OFF FUTURE…… I hope I do NOT have an aversion to fish, because I LIVE ON IT!

      I normally eat a lot of fish and seafood but now I just can’t stand it. Hopefully I’ll get over that soon!

    Confession: I felt completely insane and out of my mind during my first pregancy first tri. I was overly emotional, crazy morning sickness, and just tired ALL of the time. it was SO hard. but I found my groove in the second tri. I loved all the salty stuff too 🙂

    Beautiful pic of baby bendall!! I loved loved loved this post (even if its giving me a hint of baby fever!)

    is this a surprise gender baby? so exciting. i think you’re having a girl. here’s an old wives tale: you will have whatever you dream of. but i actually had dreams that i had a baby girl, and i ended up with a boy.

    by the way, i feel you on the itchy skin. i had a really bad rash all around my stomach for the full duration of my pregnancy and it got worse week after week. i now have scars on my stomach from the rash.
