Hi there! How has your week been going? I love a short week! I went to one of the coolest events in my six years in NYC last week: a yoga class held at the MoMA to support peace. I was doing sun salutations surrounded by art!
I wanted to go this event so badly last year but it was sold out. I was absolutely stoked when I scored a ticket to this year’s event.
I showed up on a drizzly Thursday night dressed all in white to partake in the Lole White Tour. All participants are asked to wear white to symbolize peace. I dutifully dressed in white and prayed that the rain wouldn’t leave me with black specks!
I could feel excitement building as we waited outside the MoMA doors to be allowed into the event. I won’t mention the three gentleman that pushed me out of the way to get in the door. Oops, I mentioned it! But I summoned the peace in my white clothing to remain zen. Luckily since there were a limited number of tickets, there were plenty of mats for everyone!
The yellow Lole mats were donated by Gaiam and created this amazing pop of color in a sea of white. I felt both peaceful and uplifted at once.
The class was led by three renowned instructors: Colleen Saidman Yee, Elena Brower and Rodney Yee. Elena Brower teaches on one of my favorite yoga website, YogaGlo. Rodney Yee has several extremely popular DVDs and operates a yoga studio with his wife, Colleen.
The class started with Colleen leading us through a warm up sequence involving some meditation and stretching. Rodney then stepped in to bring us through a challenging vinyasa. The class ended with Elena taking us through some slower, feel-good stretch poses and final savasana and mediation.
The entire class was set to live classical music. I want all my classes to be set to music like this! The string music was a perfect mix of upbeat for the vinyasas and soothing for the relaxation and meditation.
I have to say that this was one of the best yoga events I have ever been to in NYC. It was so relaxing and calming and yet felt so powerful. The instructors were amazing and, for once, there was nothing stressful about being in New York!
Ahhh, you can see my baby pooch in that photo!!
Lole made this amazing 2 minute video that captures the event. I wanted to include it so you could get a sense of the evening.
The White Tour 2014 started in Barcelona, Spain then went on to Montreal, Canada, New York and then Toronto. The last stop will be in Edmonton, Canada.
Readers, do you think art and yoga coincide? Would you wear white to promote peace? Tell me about the best yoga class you have ever taken.
I love the colors!! I would absolutely wear white to promote peace, and the yellow mats are so beautiful!
The best yoga class I ever attended was a Bikram Yoga class; it was my second time there, and I just felt a flow of relief. Stress relief from everything, I slept so well that night, and I really felt so much more calm and at peace with myself.
I want to do this. Where/how so I get tickets and where do I go. The video enthralled me. Please give me the inside tract on this. Peace is a wonderful message.
p.s. The baby pooch is appealing and beautiful.
Seriously so cool! I can’t believe there was live music. I think that alone would make it feel more powerful, but having that many people there all moving in sync just adds to it. This is a fitness bucket list item for me now. Thanks for posting!
