Friday’s Food & Fitness: Pete’s Favorite Food + barre3

Hello!  It’s Friday!  Another week is gone and another weekend is upon us.  What are your plans?  I know a lot of people are racing this weekend.  I have a special dinner planned and then a baby brunch on Sunday.  The rest of the time I will be in frantic cleaning mode. #atinyhumanistakingovermyapartment

Anyway, I hope whatever you have planned, it’s amazing! Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday’s Food & Fitness: Pete’s Favorite Meals + barre3

When I started this blog I just started putting my life out there.  I never really asked the Hubs if he wanted to be a part of it.  It’s a blog about my life, which he is a big part of so naturally I just put him on here.  In 90% of the photos he is eating something (that man is thin but he loves to eat).  Anyway, regardless of what he thinks about our lives being chronociled on the internet, it is going to continue to happen and this post is no exception.  Baby B is arriving in just 5 short weeks (maybe more, maybe less).  I’m doing all the normal things to prepare like setting up a bassinet, ordering diapers, sterilizing bottles, etc.  But one way I thought would be fun to prepare is to make some of Pete’s favorite meals.  I’ve heard that babies are very time consuming (who knew?) and you end up being exhausted for like weeks, monthsβ€”okβ€”years!  So I’m thinking I will not have much time to cook after Baby B’s arrival.  So the Hubs and I made a list of his favorite meals and I’m on a mission to make them for him.

irish nachos 3 Irish Nachos.  I’ve talked about these at least twice before but this was top of the list for Pete.  I made them for the first time less than a year ago and they have quickly become a favorite of his.  I top mine with salsa and plain Greek yogurt.  So good!  Recipe from Skinnytaste.

french bread pizza

French Bread Pizza with Crispy Basil.  This is another new one to the list (I’m thinking his favorite foods have more to do with what he can remember than what he actually likes).  A drizzle (ok let’s be honest, a smothering) of balsamic vinegar on top makes this pizza so incredible.  The official Pete verdict?  It’s across between garlic bread and pizza.  How could you go wrong?  Recipe from Half Baked Harvest.

Lamb Gyros with Tzatsiki and Hummus.  Ok this one is an oldie.  I started making these way way back in our Sydney days when I had an oven the size of a microwave.  They come and go in terms of menu rotation but they are definitely a favorite.  Recipe from moi.  Oh and I don’t have a photo of these because we ate them all and although I made the tzatziki AND hummus from scratch on a WEEKNIGHT (who am I!?!), they both got thrown out due to a miscommunication.  Apparently I cannot blog, watch TV and answer questions all at the same time.

Last Saturday I hosted another Levo League event at the new barre3 West Village studio.  I have been wanting to write about barre3 since they opened at the end of August.  I was truly excited to check them out!  You all know I love, ok am obsessed, with barre classes and they have been a staple for me during pregnancy.  I have been a fan of barre3’s online classes for awhile so I was excited to check them out in person.  I’m so glad I did!

Here’s what you’ll find at barre3:

barre3 4

  • 60 minutes of heart-pumping, booty shaping cardio and toning.  This barre class has a major calorie burn component to it but doesn’t lose focus on the toning and shaping your body aspect.
  • A beautiful, sun-filled studio with large windows in the heart of the West Village.
  • A three-part focus in class on: static holds, small movements and big range of motions.  For example, you might hold a squat, then do small squat pulses and then full range of motion squats.  Hits all the right spots!
  • Each class consist of a warm-up, stretching, cardio moves, thigh and seat shaping moves, integrated strength using light dumbbells (by integrated I mean you are not just isolating your arms put you will perform compound movements), core and abdominal work and more stretching.  The class is less formulaic than other barre classes I’ve been to which is great because it keeps you guessing (including your muscles) but it also means you don’t know what to expect (which can be good or bad depending on what you like).
  • A focus on balance (!), strength and flexibility with moves from yoga, ballet and Pilates.

Overall I was really pleased with what barre3 had to offer.  I really enjoy their barre classes and would love to go back more often.  The location isn’t great for me since I live on the UES and cabs to the West Village aren’t cheap and public transport takes a lifetime to get down there. But, the instructors are awesome and the workout is very motivational.  I was really appreciative of how welcoming everyone was to me at barre3 and all the modifications and advice they gave me so I could adapt the workout for my pregnancy.

Readers, what is your tried and true go-to meal?  Can you answer questions (correctly) and simultaneously do two other things?  If you are a blogger, does your significant other and/or family mind being the subject of blog fodder?

i really need to get myself to a barre class! everyone who goes loves it. my tried-and-true meal, hmmm… welp i don’t cook much these days, so if i do, it’s generally Brussels sprouts and veggie burgers. but at a restaurant i’ll always order fish or a salad w/ chicken. i don’t talk much about my dating life on my blog, but i know my best friends love it when i reference them. and they are wonderful. πŸ™‚

Awww, that’s so cute that you’re trying to make Pete some of his favorite meals before the little one arrives! It sounds like you’re going into nesting mode — only about a month to go!! πŸ™‚

PS – My hubby is super private, and it’s kind of comical that I have a blog where I share all kinds of stuff, meanwhile he doesn’t have any social media or anything!

Awwwh, that’s so nice that you are going to be making his favourite meals.
This weekend is going to be full of cleaning for me too. Fun!

I love hearing more about Barre, since I doubt I’ll be able to take a class any time soon. They are super far from where I live so, doing a class would take up to 3 hours with all the driving. Who has that kind of “free” time?
I love that you’re making all of Pete’s favorite foods. You are such a good wife!! I have to say that Mike is very good about being in the blog, and sometimes even enjoys it. I try not to get too personal with him (or the rest of my family) but pretty much everyone knows, if it happens, it may go in the blog!
At a recent wedding, we were taking a group photo, and my husband yelled out “don’t be surprised to find this in a blog post!” So true. Of course I then purposely did NOT use the photo!
Can’t wait to see you next week…

Haha! I think my family reacts the same way about being on the blog!

You’re making him his favourite meal? You’re the best, Brittany, I’m not even sure about my fav dish so imagine how aware I am about my boyfriend’s! And that baby’s about to come, you must be so nervous! πŸ™‚

That french bread pizza looks like it is the most scrumptious meal ever! nom! You know you are my inspiration to try a barre class. I am so determined to do one before the end of the year!

I refer to my husband as “Husband” and try not to disclose anything about him (his job, his habits, his family) since he didn’t sign up to have his personal info broadcasted. Like you I’m going crazy with cooking, except I’m making huge amounts of meals and freezing them for after baby. It’s centered on my husband’s preferences since I don’t care and will eat the same thing for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Thankfully even my teenage boys are OK with being on the blog on occasion:)
I probably post more about Chris than I should because of his job but he reads my blog every day and seems to be OK with it (he only asked me to take something off once:).
I want some of Pete’s French Bread pizza!!!

I love it – it’s like a food/recipe bucket list before your baby arrives haha. Still need to try barre! I’m always tempted whenever you post about it. And go-to meal….hm….NACHOS! It’s the worst. I could eat three full platters of them – they are too good!

My go-to meal is definitely salmon and spaghetti squash. I never ever get sick of that combo, that’s for sure! πŸ™‚
