The Best Prenatal Classes in NYC

Oh hi!  How are you?  I’m (literally) waddling along.  Although we had Baby B’s shower back in August, some of our friends here in NYC were kind enough to throw us a beautiful brunch before the baby gets here.  It was a great excuse to eat some good food and catch up with our friends before the distraction of a newborn!

I don’t know if any other pregnant mamas out there have tried to find prenatal fitness classes but they aren’t always easy to find.  Personally I have found a lot of prenatal DVDs and online workouts that have been very useful, but classes are fewer and far between.  Not sure why because I think a prenatal Zumba class or prenatal Aqua Zumba class would be amazing (if not just for marketing??).  But maybe that’s just me.

I have however found a few good classes that I think are worth checking out if you have a baby on board.  Here’s my list of the best prenatal classes in NYC!

Physique 57 Prenatal

Physique 57 1
I feel like this one was obvious because I’ve mentioned more than once how much I love barre classes and Physique 57 in particular.  Their prenatal class is no exception! Here’s what is great about their prenatal classes:

  • A welcoming environment and tons of encouragement that you are doing something good for you and your baby.
  • A class that can be fast paced enough to offer cardio and toning benefits but plenty of emphasis on going at your own pace.
  • Knowledgeable instructors that understand a pregnant woman’s physiological needs.
  • An emphasis on key toning areas like arms, thighs, seat, hips, transverse abdominals, obliques and pelvic floor.
  • A chance to build strength and endurance for labor, delivery and beyond.

Core Pilates

I’ve found pilates to be a huge help during pregnancy and I was excited to find Core Pilates, a studio offering prenatal classes conveniently located in Union Square.  Here’s what I love about Core Pilates:

  • Mat and Tower classes using equipment and the apparatus.  This provides plenty of options and elevates your workout beyond the traditional exercises.
  • Tons of emphasis on breathing, working the deep core muscles and kegel exercises.
  • A safe environment with plenty of chances for rest.
  • Great mind/body connection that helps deal with the stress of labor and a new baby.
  • Knowledgeable instructors with experience in prenatal classes.

New York Yoga

Prenatal yoga is pretty much mandatory for mamas-to-be.  With the aches and pains associates with pregnancy, it’s nice to take an hour or so to stretch it out and make yourself feel good.  New York Yoga on the Upper East Side offers great prenatal classes geared towards all levels.  Here are a few things I love!

  • A relaxing class geared towards stretching and strengthening without pushing past your limits.
  • A warm environment encouraging women to feel comfortable.
  • Plenty of opportunities to customize your practice based on your individual concerns like back pain, stiffness, etc.

Readers, have you ever had a devil on horseback?  How do you find new classes in your area?  Sweet or savory for brunch?

You’re absolutely right, it’s very difficult to find prenatal classes. I looked and looked in my area and only found a prenatal yoga class that ran once a week and that was it. I stuck to my prenatal workout DVDs and online videos instead. They really should offer more options. And I think prenatal Zumba would be awesome!

I agree the DVDs are generally your best bet. I am totally into this prenatal Zumba though. I’m going to pitch it to them. Haha.

Hope you are feeling great. I am assuming you are having your babies tomorrow. How exciting!!! Good luck!

I have never had Devils on Horseback. Sounds delicious.

We don’t have a huge selection of classes where I live. I find things through word of mouth, mostly.

I am bad with brunch. I usually tend towards breakfast, and even then, I stick to eggs, so I’ll go with savory.

I can’t believe how close you are getting – pretty much anytime now:)

definitely sweet for brunch. I so wish I hadn’t read that menu as I am on my way to the gym now on an empty stomach! lol. so nice of your friends to do that for you!! I didn’t take many prenatal classes, I did take total body modified weights until month 6. I could have kept going but my favorite instructor left and the new one had no cares about modifying the class for me 🙁
