Friday’s Food & Fitness: Kalette + A Commercial

Hey hey!  It’s Friday!  I feel like it’s been a long week and as much as I am trying to de-stress I feel like the weight of getting as much done in a short period of time is making me feel a tad bit stressed out.  Oh well, c’est la vie.  I guess what gets done will get done and what doesn’t, won’t.  Not a lot you can do about it!

Welcome to this week’s Friday’s Food & Fitness where we are talking kalettes and a commercial!

I have two vegetables that I love pretty much no matter how you prepare them (ok steamed is not my favorite unless there is sauce but besides that…): kale and brussel sprouts. Give me some kale chips, a kale smoothie or a kale salad and I’m happy. Just this week I made this warm kale salad from Iowa Girl Eats TWICE!warm kale salad

Oh and then brussel sprouts. I made them last year for Thanksgiving and they were a huge hit (if I do say so myself). They taste great sautéed with garlic or something sweet like balsamic vinegar or maple syrup. How about brussel sprout slaw or pan roasted b. sprouts? You just can’t go wrong. So imagine my excitement, no, ELATION at finding out there is a new hybrid vegetable on the market! That’s right my friends, Kalettes! A hybrid between kale and brussel sprouts. Whhaaat!? I know. The world of possibilities just seems endless. I predict kalette chips will be the new kale chip. Now, if only I could get my hands on some!

In an effort to make Pete his favorite foods before this baby demands all my attention, I made up a batch of chili this week. I actually made two batches: one turkey and one beef. The turkey is frozen for after baby and the beef one we ate.

Excuse the photo, I look it of the leftovers I had at lunch. I had to do it stealthily in the kitchen so my co-workers wouldn’t think I was totally bananas.

It has been a long time since I’ve made beef chili and can I just say, it is so much better than turkey chili! I used extra lean meat but even still, it has more fat than turkey and it just tastes so much richer and better. I guess Carla Hall was right when she said, don’t take all the fat out!

We had an amazing event with cheerFIT at Reebok FitHub in Union Square this week! Unfortunately I couldn’t participate because this baby basically feels like it is going to fall out at any second, but I was able to snap some fun photos!

Oh and while this is not technically fitness related, I thought I would pass along this really fun opportunity.  Have you heard of Dove’s Real Beauty Campaign?  Well, they are looking for real women between the ages of 24 to 40 for their campaign.  If you live in the NYC area and are interested in this opportunity (it’s paid), you should fill out an application and you could be featured in a Dove commercial!  For more information, check out the flyer on my Facebook page

Readers, have you heard of kalettes?  What are your favorite vegetables?  What do you think of the idea of real women appearing in commercials?

The chili is perfect for this time of year. Homemade tortilla chips and some sharp cheddar on top make the dish!

Wanna laugh? Brussels sprouts are one of the only veggies that I’m NOT a fan of. Ha! I haven’t attempted to eat them in a few years though, and my mother always says that tastebuds change over time, so maybe I’ll give em another go sometime.

I think I’m going to make some veggie chili sometime soon! Ever since I had really good chili at a cafe a few weeks ago, I’m craving more of it… with corn bread perhaps?! Yum!

No way! They are so good! Maybe you need to have them prepared differently?

I’ve never done the cornbread thing. I should try that!

I want to eat that kale salad right now!! I have to make that. And, I also made chili last week and have to agree about the meat. There’s just nothing like beef chili. I also love that you had to take a ‘stealth’ photo!!
I may look into that Dove thing…thanks for the heads-up 🙂

That kale salad is so good! Kristin’s blog has some amazing recipes.

I was so nervous that someone would walk in while I was taking the photo and then I would have to explain why I was weirdly taking a photo of my food! Haha.

You do amazing recipes with kale — Kale, Yeah! The cheerFit looks like a lot of fun that I would like (and could probably do, too!).

CheerFit! That sounds like so much fun! I cheered growing up, and teach group exercise now so that sounds like the best possible combination! I will have to see if I can find a class in Austin to try.

YUM! That warm kale salad looks delightful! I can see why you made it twice! YUM! ..also, you are so cute “stealthily” taking a picture of your lunch! Sometimes I do that and I’m like, “hey people, it’s for my blog!” ahahahah!! Also, what a great opportunity that Dove is offering! I love that they use ‘real’ woman and not just paid models!

Most of my friends would understand me taking photos of my food but if a co-worker I don’t know very well walked into the kitchen, they would totally think I was crazy!

My parents had VERY traditional tastes, so basically I grew up eating canned corn, string beans (ughhhhh, so slimy from a can), and potatoes (they counted a potato as a vegetable).

Then I got older and started experimenting and found I love brussels sprouts, bean sprouts, and all kinds of squashes. Oh, and spinach. They only ever served us iceberg lettuce.

We ate iceberg lettuce too! And we used to have to eat frozen peas. Yuck!! Now I like to go the farmer’s market and pick out interesting looking veggies and just try them out. It’s kind of fun!

I have not heard of kalettes – very interesting.
Your chili recipe looks tasty – I might have to try it!!!
Sorry you weren’t able to participate in the fitness event but you will be back at it soon!!!

Kim, I know that it is only temporary and I’m actually enjoying a little extra R&R time! Let me know if you try the chili!

I have never heard of kalette, but will definitely research. I have a love/hate relationship with kale. I realized i can’t have kale cold or raw, it has to be a bit wilted or steamed.. my favorite veggies are definitely spinach, broccoli and brussels sprouts.

I’ve never heard of kalettes before, but they sound amazing! I need to try that Warm Kale Salad too. Your chili looks phenomenal and so simple too! LOVE it.
