Getting a Bum Bum Lift with Brazil Butt Lift

You guys, Brazil is having a moment.  There have been so many things lately that are focused on Brazil.  It must be with all the World Cup and Rio Olympics fever that all of a sudden the world is focused on Brazil. I got this in my email recently from Athleta.

Well, recently when I tried out Beachbody On Demand, I noticed the Brazil Butt Lift program.  Of course I have heard of this program before.  It has been around for awhile and isn’t new, but I had never actually tried it.  I figured with all the focus Brazil is getting lately and their reputation for an obsession with fitness, I would give it a try.

The program is led by Leandro Carvalho, who is basically a Brazilian Beto Perez (the famous Colombian who founded Zumba).  His claim to fame is that he started this workout to train supermodels.  He has a nice Brazilian Portuguese accent and he is kind of funny, even if he doesn’t mean to be.

The program is designed to give you that beautiful bum bum (Portuguese for booty) that is an absolute requirement for the Brazilian bikinis.

Side note- A Brazilian friend said that American bikini bottoms look like diapers.  #cryinglaughing

Here’s the breakdown of the program:

Bum Bum– The signature class to work the booty!  In this 30 minute program I burned 222 calories.  It was a mix of ballet, toning, plyometrics and cardio.  It is a great workout and definitely targets the bum bum.  It is also a good calorie burner in a short amount of time.  Leandro keeps it moving and doesn’t allow for a lot of rest, which means the workout is very effective.

Brazil Butt Lift Bum Bum

High & Tight– This 40 minute toning class uses strength bands and weights.  I burned about 100 calories in this class, which is not a huge burn but it was very good for targeted sculpting.  The beginning part of the video is standing work but the best part of the workout is the mat work.  It reminds me of pilates and barre classes, which can sometimes yield a lower calorie burn but big toning results.

Cardio Axe– Axe is a form of Brazilian dance and that is exactly what this 30 minute cardio workout is.  It is a Brazilian rhythms dance class that reminded me a lot of Zumba, except with a Brazilian flair.  There are classical Brazilian moves like the axe and samba.  Leandro teaches you four combinations and then you put them together at the end.  I loved that it was non-stop and provided a big calorie burn of 253 calories in just 30 minutes.  There is lots of repetition of the choreography making it easy to follow and my heart rate did get pretty high.  Some of the moves look a little cheesy but they are easy to follow and fun.

Brazil Butt Lift Cardio Axe

Bum Bum Rapido– This is a ten minute version of the classical Bum Bum class.  It focuses entirely on the glutes with a mix of ballet inspired moves (plie, passe, arabesque), capoeira-inspired moves and cardio bursts like jump squats.  In just 10 minutes I burned 100 calories!

Abs Rapido– This is another ten minuted class but this one focuses just on the abs.  I used a 5lb weight for this class, although you don’t necessarily need a weight.  It is a crunch-less class, which I like, and you spend the time doing standing ab work and planks.  There is some cardio benefit and I burned 80 calories.

Rio Extreme– This 50 minute class is the biggest calorie burner of the program at 364 calories.  It is interval training style and the class uses weights and resistance bands.  After the warm up, Leandro takes you through 1-2 minute intervals alternating between cardio and strength training.  Although the focus is on the bum bum, it is a total body workout including cardio bursts and ab toning segments.  The samba music in the background really gets you in the Brazilian spirit!

Brazil Butt Lift Rio Extreme

Tummy Tuck– This 20 minute core class uses a lot of traditional ab moves.  I burned 70 calories and while the class isn’t bad, I would have liked to have focused on the transverse abdominals a bit more.

Uppercuts– This 13 minute workout focuses on the upper body.  I found using heavy weights maximized the effectiveness of this workout because there were not a lot of reps.  I burned 90 calories in this workout.

Brazil Butt Lift Bum Bum Rapido

Sculpt– The second 50 minute workout in this series.   Again heavy weights maximized the effectiveness of this total body toning workout.  I burned 190 calories.

Overall I thought this was a solid program that really can deliver a tighter bum bum if you keep at it consistently.  It had a lot of good sculpting moves but you would have to make sure to incorporate enough cardio to really get your calorie burn.  I also like that the videos pan between the studio class and the class filmed on Copacabana Beach in Rio.

The program comes with an eating guide, a fitness guide, printable workout cards to take with you when you can’t use the videos, a calendar and some fitness plans.

      Thanks Nellie! They are from a Brazilian fitness brand called Track & Field. There is actually a store on the UES (I think it is 90th and Lex).

    I’m loving your workout clothes too! If I had a bum bum like the model pictured, I’d totally rock the Brazilian bikini bottom! 😉 Me though, probably not!

    Totally agreed, Brazil has been getting a lot of attention with the upcoming Olympics. I would loveee to go! Are you planning on attending any events? That would be awesome!

    And I’m laughing at your friend’s comment about American bikinis. Brazilians definitely wear skimpy bikinis compared to many of the styles here. I don’t think I’d be comfortable wearing a thong-like bathing suit bottom hahaha

    Yup, this is an awesome program! I did it a few years ago and got great results! I really enjoyed it! Every once in a while, I’ll still pop in one of the DVDs.

    Surly, I would be good for the 10 minute workout–on a good day the 13 minute workout. The Brazilian Butt Lift looks and sounds rigorousssss! I have been to Brazil and I hope that I get to go to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Never, however, would I wear a Brazilian bikini!!

    I don’t know if I could rock those Brazilian bikinis, if I looked like that model then for sure! Lol! I feel like lunges and running/walking stairs are the best butt workouts!
