Blogfest IDEA World Fitness Conference 2015: The Highlights

Hi folks!  Well, I just arrived back from Blogfest IDEA World Fitness Conference and I almost don’t know where to begin.  I feel inspired, motivated and also completely overwhelmed.  I was surrounded by amazing bloggers and some of the biggest names in fitness.  It was four days of fitness heaven!  Today I’m going to give you the highlights from the conference and later this week I’ll give you my takeaways from Blogfest, the “what I learned”, which is always a lot!

Blogfest Highlights

Zumba at Blogfest

My absolute #1 highlight of the entire Blogfest weekend was this guy:

Beto Perez.  I Zumbaed with the founder and creator of Zumba himself.  It was aaaaahhhhmazing.  If you are a Zumba fan, you know that Beto is big news.  His energy is like that I’ve never seen before in a class.  As bloggers we were lucky enough to have an intimate session with him on Friday where we got to rock out and dance.  I was so amazed by his ability to draw the crowd in with his charismatic personality.

So we all know Beto’s energy is amazing, what you may not know about Beto is that he is incredibly humble.  He brought his Zumba workout to the US when he couldn’t speak hardly any English and he had no money. He ended up staying in a park for 2 nights because he couldn’t get a hotel!  He had no idea what to charge for his classes and he was even late for his first class because he couldn’t find out where he was going.

Also, he talked about how hard he and his team work at Zumba (it is clear that he is really hands on) and how it is important for him to get the people in the back of the class who are shy involved because those are the people that really need the recognition and encouragement (not front row divas like me! haha!).  I was seriously blown away by what a great instructor and person Beto was and I feel so lucky to have had this opportunity.

Blogfest Keynote & Workout with Gabby Reece

Gabby Reece was the Blogfest keynote speaker and I was really excited to hear from a successful, female professional athlete.  I’ll recap Gabby’s keynote speech later this week but let’s just say, she was focused on functional training, incorporating fitness into everyday life and doing what is best for you and your family.

Her workout was kick butt!  We went through several rounds of exercises using our own body weight and some props she brought along with us.  It was a ton of fun and I have to say, my team rocked it!  It was tough cookies and I was kind of tired and sore afterwards (but in a good way!).

Piloxing

I’ve heard a lot about Piloxing before and I think I tried the video a looooong time ago but I was excited to check it out in person.  In case you haven’t heard of it, Piloxing is a cardio fusion program using the principles of pilates and kickboxing and dance.  We started out practicing some centering and balance exercises and then moved on to the actual workout.

The workout was so much fun!  It consisted of some kickboxing combos, dancing (the dancing was awwwwwesome!) and some standing toning moves that definitely are based on pilates principles.  The class was led by Piloxing founder, Viveca Jensen, and her energy was pretty incredible.  She definitely was super charismatic and motivating.  I could feel the energy riveting throughout the room.

The Convention

The convention itself had a ton of great information and cool products to try.  Mostly I just loved walking around to the different booths and eating the free food checking things out.

There were tons of demos of equipment, the latest tech gadgets, fitness clothing and so much more.  I somehow managed to walk out without spending a dime though.  Score!

Bloggers!

One of my favorite parts of blog conferences is meeting up with other bloggers.  Sometimes they are bloggers I’ve known virtually for a long time and other times they are brand new to me!  

This year I was a little nervous because most of the bloggers I knew from last year’s Blogfest were not going to be able to make it.  I am kind of shy in large groups and I get anxious walking into a room filled with people I don’t know, especially if they know other people.

Well, luckily for me, my good friend, Melissa Burton, was in attendance (I met her at FitBloggin two years ago).  She knows pretty much every single blogger ever and she is the matchmaker of bloggers.  She is always introducing people who she thinks will get along.  I met a ton of fun bloggers and I have to say, I didn’t spend a single second feeling nervous or out of place while I was there.

I had an amazing time Zumbaing with my girl Jill.  We were huge Zumba geek fans together!

There were so many other amazing bloggers who I loved getting to spend time with and I can’t wait to go back next year and meet some more!

    What an amazing convention. I have been attending professional conventions for years–local, state and national. While the national conventions are impressive, I have never had the fun and inspiration that you experienced! Looks like you have the Piloxing moves mastered! If I could workout with anyone it would be my best friend!

    I’m actually certified to teach Piloxing. The training was a lot of fun. The format has evolved a little bit–for the better, I think–and I learn something new each time I go to someone else’s class or watch the new Piloxing volume. (No, I haven’t actually taught any classes…)

        it was really fun! The format has changed a little bit since I did it (some of the blocks rearranged, a few more options here and there), so I don’t know whether the training is exactly the same. Piloxing is based on “blocks” (dance, boxing, pilates) that go in a certain order. Specific blocks are mandatory–used in every class–and others can be changed out. So if you teach a regular class, you can slowly change the class, one block at a time, instead of dumping the whole choreo and starting over again.

        We had a master class at the beginning, and then broke down the moves in each of the blocks. I found the focus on the form really helpful. (I’m suspicious of anyone who doesn’t get sore core/abs/obliques now!) We finished with another master class. Of course there was Q&A, information on PIA (PIloxing Instructor Association), how to stay certified, etc. I really like the format.

    Not surprisingly, Blogfest looks like it was a total blast!! I’m sad I didn’t get to attend and hang out with you, but hopefully we can meet up somewhere in the world some time again soon ๐Ÿ™‚ Sometimes we seem to be in the same part of the world – i.e. you being at Blogfest and me being a few hours away, or you being back to Cape Cod when I’m visiting family 6 hours away next month – but never close enough to meet up!

    I’ve been wanting to try Piloxing since seeing their booth at last year’s event but haven’t done so yet. And I’m excited to hear all about Gabby Reece’s keynote!

    so excited that you got to hang with my favorite girls Jill and Melissa!! LOVE them! We spent a night walking around Denver during Fitbloggin. and I was FREAKING out that you guys got to meet the one and only BETO PEREZ Squee!!! Now I feel like I know him through six degrees of separation. ๐Ÿ™‚
