Friday’s Food & Fitness: Good Eats + Great Workouts

This week absolutely flew by!  I think it had something to do with the fact that I was totally and complete useless for about 3 days while I recovered from jet lag.  Why is it so much harder to travel east than west?  Anywho, we are back on track now and ready for the weekend!  Do you have anything fun planned?  I think we are just hanging around and hoping for some nice weather.

Normally on Friday’s Food & Fitness I like to recap the week that has just past, but I actually have to go back one week to my second week visiting Australia.  I was SO excited to be back in English language territory that I took full advantage of the fitness classes on offer and, of course, I roped my husband into taking me out for a few nice meals. 😉

I seriously don’t even know where to begin . . .

First there was the degustation menu at Bentley in Sydney.

Date night just the two of us with good food and good wine (an one excellent cocktail!).

Then there was a leisurely lunch at Opera Bar located underneath the Sydney Opera House overlooking the harbour.

And then there was lunch at Jonah’s in Palm Beach.  This has been something I’ve been wanting to do for ages since I heard about it a few years ago.  It has the most amazing views overlooking the beach.

The food is wonderful with a heavy focus on seasonal ingredients and fresh seafood.

Plus we were able to do an early Christmas celebration with Pete’s family!

One of my favorite parts of the entire week was my workouts.  I was super excited when Xtend Barre finally opened in Brooklyn after being in love with their DVD for awhile and was even more excited to learn that the franchise had landed in Australia.  I booked three classes in one week with Xtend Barre Sydney and Xtend Barre Manly!

The workouts were just as balletic and fun as I remembered them.  Although I thought my Brooklyn workouts were a little tougher than my class at Xtend Barre Sydney (NYers are hardcore!), our instructor at Xtend Manly really pushed my limits!  Plus, my MIL and SIL came with me, which made it extra fun!

I also finally got to try their Xtend Stick class.  Unlike some other barre methodologies, Xtend clearly has it roots in pilates and dance.  The Xtend Stick class really reminded me of the pilates tower apparatus because it uses a stick or handles attached to bungees that are attached to the barre.  Basically it was like using an unstable barre to perform normal barre, which adds a whole new element of balance and core work to the class.  It is kind of like using a bosu to perform normal strength training moves, it requires additional balance and stability.

I loved the addition of the stick and the resistance tubes to add a new element to barre training.  I love barre but I’m also always looking for a new challenge!

Speaking of being challenged, can we please talk about the megaformer?  If you remember, I tried my first class at Btone in Boston over the summer.  I thought it was a uniquely challenging workout and I was intrigued to take another class so when I found out that Physicore offered megaformer classes in Sydney, I signed right up.

The name of the game in a megaformer class is slow (8 counts for each move usually-4 counts to move one way and then 4 counts back to start) but slow doesn’t mean easy.  In fact, the megaformer is like an amped up pilates reformer machine that makes everything so much harder!  My muscles were quivering after this class.  Plus, the class works on quick transitions so you never really get a chance to rest.  I have to say that it is waaaaay more difficult than even a traditional pilates apparatus class!

And some scenes from my run (I KNOW! Who am I??) along the beaches in Curl Curl where we rented a beach house.

With views like that it would make anyone want to go through the absolute horrible pain of not only running but running on a 30 degree celsius day in a hilly area!

Well, that’s all folks!  I hope you have a fabulous weekend!!

Readers, what outdoor scenery has inspired you to get outside for your workout?  Favorite restaurant with a view?  Favorite workout of the week?

Wow-anyplace in Palm Beach and the Opera Bar for scenery — how spectacular! Your family photo is lovely! I appreciate all views and luckily have a constant CC MA view. AND, Xtend Barre is fun! Your form is perfect on the workout machines at Physicore.
