Friday’s Food & Fitness: A Healthy Weekend in NYC

Hey hey!  It’s Friday!  Do you have any big plans for the weekend?  The Hubs and I are going to be hitting the beach!  Hopefully we’ll get some great weather.

Welcome to Friday’s Food and Fitness!  I’ve got a little recap for you today–a Healthy Weekend in NYC!

One thing I love about New York is the food.  Not only the food but the number of healthy food options is amazing!  I love to eat healthy and it is so much easier when you have options that you can easily get your hands on.  Let’s be honest, preparing yourself healthy food all the time is exhausting!

I had a whole list of places I wanted to try but ended up not being able to hit all of them.  The first one I tried was Mulberry & Vine.  This little shop was so cute and the food was delicious!

I sampled some of their season fare including the strawberry and arugula salad, broccoli with honey sriracha, thai chilli noodles, roasted sweet potato and kale and black beans with avocado.  Everything was so good and you can definitely order meat at Mulberry & Vine but I didn’t miss it.

One of my all time favorite places is Juice Generation and although it is pricey, the juices are so good!  Plus the acai bowls are delicious.  I even convinced Cooper to try some kale with watermelon juice and spinach with pineapple.  Although I think he figured out there are veggies in it because now he won’t go near any juice drink that is green!

On a separate day we went back and tried some of their baked goods.  I have to admit that their vegan, gluten free acai poptart was actually delicious.  Although notice it didn’t say sugar-free!

Another one of my new healthy favorites is Inday.  Their take on healthy Indian food is so good!

And of course, no visit to NYC is complete without hitting up the greenmarket.  I love the farmer’s markets in NYC.  I used to go to one every Wednesday during my lunch break to pick up fresh fruits and veggies for the week.

The fitness…oh the fitness!  This is what I came to NYC for!  I love love love the classes here and I miss them so much!  Before we left for the city that never sleeps, I created a rather ambitious (ok close to impossible) schedule for us to follow.  It started the day we arrived–check in, change, drop baby with Pop Pop and CLASS!

We started off at one of my favorite dance cardio studios, AKT in Motion.  Founder Anna Kaiser teaches top clientele like Kelly Ripa so you know you are in the right place for a great workout.  What I love about this dance cardio class is that there is definitely choreography but it is super easy to pick up but it’s also high energy and fun.

Plus the disco ball is so fun, the music is high energy and great for dancing!  The class is set up in intervals so you also get your strength in as well.  Definitely a happy hour!

Flex Barre 3

Day 2 dawned bright and early with a trip to Flex Studios.  This was my first time at their studio and I was excited to check them out, plus they were within walking distance from our hotel.  We signed up for Flex Barre and I was excited to learn that it incorporates a bit of cardio.

The class was tough and I loved it!  Plus the instructor was super nice and energetic.

Day 2, Round 2 brought us to another one of my old favorites, Chaise Fitness.  I love their Reinvention Method and how they have taken the pilates chair and created an entire new workout with it using bungees.  We elected to do cardio chair, which includes the toning benefits from their signature class with bursts of cardio.

To be honest, we probably didn’t need anymore cardio, but I love this method so much and the time worked for us so we worked it!

Day 3 brought us to another dance cardio class at Body By Simone.  I love love love the energy at BBS and the dance cardio is on point.  It is tough, there is a ton of choreography and it is nonstop dance for 45 minutes (last 15 minutes are toning).  It is exhausting and so fun.  Our instructor was hilarious and amazing.  She was dancing in a Broadway show and told us she had two shows that day and it was physically exhausting yet her energy was through the roof.  Whatever she was on, I want some!

Finally, we completed our cardio and headed to SLT (Strengthen Lengthen and Tone) in the afternoon.  This is a megaformer class and although it isn’t my first, I still am getting used to the megaformer machine and the moves.  Definitely having pilates experience on the reformer is a huge plus.

This was my first time at SLT and I loved the vibe.  Our instructor was so nice and really encouraging and also really great at cueing the moves, which is huge in this class because you do each move for a minute and although the moves are slow, the transitions are fast to keep your heart pumping and your muscles engaged.  The only thing I didn’t care for was the desk assistant who I thought was a little rude.

Sunday we began questioning the sanity of our workout schedule but thanks to prepaid classes and no promise of refunds, we decided it was better to be sore than sorry and headed to Flex Studios for a second time to take Flex Pilates.

I was really looking forward to trying this class on their signature Flex Reformer machine that has a pilates chair attached to the back.  It was actually very similar to a megaformer class in that we would do each move for about a minute and then quickly transition to another move.  What I liked about this class was that is definitely showed its roots from pilates and it was really hard!!

Holy moly!  The burn factor in this class was right on!  It is also definitely a class that you want to do over and over because the first time can be a bit difficult to know if you are doing it correctly.

Sunday afternoon we headed to one of my favorite studios–Physique 57.  I took my first barre class there in 2008 and have been going back ever since.  It’s a great workout and I love the burn factor I get!

Monday morning was our last morning and we debated just taking the morning off but this type of weekend only happens once in a while so we headed back to Physique for a second class!

You can see in my face there just how tired we were after a weekend of non-stop workouts but I promise you I felt great!

    You two look great — like you are having Partytime-Fun! What an aggressive workout schedule! I bet that you burned every calorie and more with your Workout and Favorite-Eats Vacation! I am pretty fond of Physique 57 and I do like the reformer for Pilates as well as the newer versions of this great workout “machine.” Keep up the good work! You Go Girls!
