I love barre classes. I love the shakes and quakes and the intensity of it all. One thing I think barre lovers and instructors alike often neglect is that in promising to build “long, lean muscles” they forget the component of flexibility and stretching. Flexibility Training is vital for achieving that dancer’s flexibility and posture because it helps increase your range of motion, go deeper into your barre workouts, avoid injuries and aches and pains and reduce soreness. Barre stretches will help you accomplish all of that and more.
Often times I see people running out of class during the stretch section. I get it. We all have busy lives. But taking some dedicated time to focus on your flexibility is worth it in the end. Trust me, you’ll thank me later when your friends are complaining about aches and pains and you feel as limber as a preschooler.
While it is true that we have a predetermined genetic disposition towards flexibility and women tend to be more flexible than men, we can all improve our flexibility simply by stretching regularly. If your goal is to touch your toes, you can do it! You just need to work at it. If you think you will never get into a split, think again. You just need to keep stretching! So remember this workout is not a one and done deal. It is a workout that you can do over and over again to train your body to be more flexible.
