Keeping Calm and Carrying On With Be More Yogic

Hi all!  So I don’t know about any of you but I have a conundrum in my life.  There are so many opportunities and so many great things to do that I am constantly trying to cram everything in to one day.  I am constantly making lists and mentally organizing my time so I can make the most out of every second of every day.  From the second I get up in the morning until the second I go to bed, I’m doing something.  It’s even hard for me to watch TV without jumping up off the couch to tick another “to do” item off my list.

But in my self-proclaimed quest to achieve a more balanced lifestyle, I realize that this full-speed-ahead attitude is not always optimal for healthy living.  In fact, it can be kind of detrimental.  Case-in-point is my sleep schedule.  I often have a really hard time falling asleep.  It’s not because I’m not tired, it’s because I don’t give myself enough time before bed to relax my mind and calm down.

One thing that has really helped me is yoga.  The mind-body connection in yoga has so many benefits beyond practice on the mat.  It helps me feel more relaxed and centered throughout my day.

Living in NYC there are literally hundreds of places you can go to practice yoga.  The options are endless.  But, sometimes schlepping my gym clothes with me to work and then rushing like a maniac to get to class on time and then dealing with the crowded subway after class all work to negate the positive benefits of my yoga practice.  This is why I love being able to practice at home.

I’ve discussed some online yoga classes in the past here and here but recently I was contacted by Be More Yogic to review their online classes.*  I love being able to customize my yoga classes based on how much time I have and what I want my focus to be for the practice.  I especially love being able to create relaxing space like lighting candles and dimming the lights.  Be More Yogic helped me create a relaxing space because their classes are all filmed in incredible locations like Zanzibar.

Right off the bat I fell in love with a few of the shorter classes to help me relax.  They have a meditation series that are short but offer great tips for meditating.  I have to admit I used one of their classes to help me fall asleep and it worked more than once!  I also loved a 10-minute bedtime yoga series focusing on forward bends (can you see a pattern here?).  There is a sequence to help you on long flights and I’m looking forward to trying that out before I fly in October! 🙂

In addition to these short classes, Be More Yogic has some great full-length classes.  Two of my favorites include their Ocean Flow class and their Detox Flow class.  Both are filmed at a stunning ocean location.  I loved that the Ocean Flow class in particular had options to advance your practice.  A risk of practicing at home is that it can be difficult to advance and challenge yourself with more difficult poses if you do not know how to do them.  The instruction on these videos is very clear and the teachers can help you progress through more difficult poses.  Of course because the class needs to keep moving, you will not always get to spend a long time practicing a particular pose.  Luckily Be More Yogic also offers shorter, pose-specific classes to help with tricky poses like tripod headstand or crow pose.

I was really impressed with the classes offered by Be More Yogic.  I’m looking forward to trying more out during my membership.  The only downside is that because Be More Yogic is new, there are not a ton of full-length classes yet.  But, by the same token, they are working to build up the content so there are new classes constantly being added!

There are free classes available but for full access you can pay only $4.99 for the first three months and $15 thereafter or $135 for the full year.

Readers, do you like to practice yoga at home?  Would you like to try Be More Yogic? Well, you are in luck!  Be More Yogic has provided me with a one-year membership to giveaway to one lucky winner!  Details on entry are below!  I will announce the winner within 48 hours after the giveaway closes.

This looks awesome! I too have issues falling asleep and even though I’m very vocal about loving yoga, I’m not very good at making it a priority. Thanks for sharing!

I am a big lover of restorative yoga before bed. It is so relaxing! Kripalu.org has a great 1-hour restorative yoga video (FREE) that I like to do after a really stressful day or when I am stricken with insomnia. Don’t worry if you don’t have the props they ask for, just pull some cushions off the couch and grab a tick blanket off the bed! Paired with some herbal tea and a lightly scented candle, you are all set for a heavenly sleep.

Restorative yoga is amazing! I need to do more of it. I do try to take the principles I learn in restorative classes and do them on my own!

Oooh fun, I LOVE doing yoga at home too! I’d be interested in trying out any of them really, especially ones that are under 30 minutes for when I just want to wake my body up first thing in the morning, or do a quick one to take a break from working during the day. I’d also like to try the workout to help you during long flights. After flying, my body always feels so achy and weird!

oh this looks awesome! i love yoga at the studio, but not so much in my apt… you see, i live in a 300 sq ft studio… yeah, tiny. its my sanctuary, and i love it, but when i take my yoga mat out, i feel really cramped, which i dont like. i know what you mean though about the rushing to get to class on time and the stress that causes. thats never fun!

Oh I need this badly! There was a time in my life when I practiced yoga twice a week and it was tremendous! I can’t even remember all the ways in which it helped me – flexibility, awareness, motivation, relaxation – it’s endless. Now I have twins. Which is why this is perfect for me!!! I can’t wait to try this tonight. Great pictures too!!

I was JUST having this conversation with Ben last night. I do way too much all of the time. I feel guilty if I sit down to watch my favorite show because surely there is something else I should be doing at the same time. Yoga is such a great balance to the constant mind chatter that follows us Type A gals :).

The idea of these yoga classes is so great. If you have 20 minutes you can still get a good class in – LOVE that! Can’t wait to check them out :).

I’d start with one of the beginner morning yoga flows. I’ve let my practice fall aside and need to start over.
