Friday’s Food & Fitness: The Australia Edition

Hi friends!  So you may have noticed that I took a bit of a break from Friday’s Food & Fitness while I was away.  Today I thought I would give you a little update on what went down while I was down under.  I have to say that Australia has some amazing food and even more amazing opportunities to stay active and fit!  

FOOD

You guys, the food was endless and amazing!  I pretty much stuck to eating my two favorite things the entire time I was there: seafood and pasta (except for when Pete randomly made me eat a ton of lamb . . . ).

We also ate at the most amazing restaurant in the Blue Mountains (which I’ll be recapping next week) at Echoes.  The food was absolutely incredible!  And the view!  Well, more on that next week.  I had the baramundi {again} nicoise salad.  Side note- Barramundi is a white fish native to Australia and it is really yummy.  You have to try it if you ever get the chance!

Dessert was equally amazing.  I can’t even remember what we ate, I just know it tasted soooo good!

FITNESS

While diet was definitely a four letter word on my trip, exercise was not!  I mentioned in last week’s Food & Fitness that I love the Les Mills programs and I had the opportunity to attend quite a few classes while I was there including BodyBalance, BodyPump, BodyAttack, BodyStep and Sh’Bam.  They were all so great!  I miss going to those classes on a regular basis but luckily I have my DVDs to keep me satisfied.  This was my first time to Sh’Bam and as a BodyJam instructor, I have to say I was impressed.  Sh’Bam is supposed to be a bit easier than BodyJam in terms of the complexity of the choreography and the intensity of the movements.  It’s still an awesome workout and the choreo is not boring.  There was one combo that involved a leap that brought me back to my ballet days.  I just let go and started jumping like I was in Swan Lake!  True story.  Ask my mom, she was there.

Unlike other Les Mills programs, Sh’Bam is only 45 minutes in length (compared to 55 minutes) so it’s perfect to pair with strength training.  I actually did Pump beforehand.  My only complaint with Sh’Bam was that some of the music seemed a bit dated and to compete with classes like BodyJam or Zumba, the music really needs to be incredibly fun and motivating.  But as a dance fitness junkie I had a blast.  My mom had fun too, right Mom? 😉

In addition to taking classes I actually went running (gasp!).  I constantly profess that I am not a runner but when this is the view you are running by everyday, you would do it too!

And of course, because we were in Australia, I spent a lot of time in the water.  Sydney has the most amazing pools everywhere and a lot of them are free!  Literally, you can go to the beach and swim in an ocean pool.  There are also a ton of pools on the Harbour.  We stayed in a house on Cremorne Point, which is right on the Harbour, and we had about a five minute walk to a completely free saltwater pool (it was harbour water so take that as you will).

And of course there was plenty of swimming in the ocean!

We also managed to get in a few good hikes both in the Whitsundays and in the Blue Mountains!

    Thank you for letting me live vicariously through your trip to Australia! I have family in the Sydney area but unfortunately I haven’t had the chance to visit yet. Your photos are beautiful! Both of the scenery and the food 🙂 I think it’s great that you got to enjoy your meals and got the chance to exercise on your vacation. It sounds like you had a great balance!

    Speaking of Les Mills – have you ever tried combat? I was thinking of trying it but haven’t yet.

    Weekend plans – Personal day today to enjoy an exercise class and pedicures with a friend, dinner plans tonight and tomorrow, and getting some running in tomorrow as well. My eating was good this week, but I took two unplanned rest days this week, so I’m looking forward to getting back in to fitness today.

      That is so cool you have family in Sydney. Do you know what part?

      I have tried combat. I don’t want to burst any bubbles but it is actually my least favorite and I’ll tell you why. It is very focused on mixed martial arts (MMA), which is great if that is what you are interested in. I prefer a class that is more loosely based on the concepts of boxing and kickboxing and include regular fitness choreography just because for me that is more fun. I also feel like other Les Mills workouts give me a better workout. All that being said, it is still a good program and I still do it on occasion when I have the opportunity. You should try it and decide if you like it because you may really enjoy it!

    Wow….I can’t stop looking over and over at this post. Every single thing you ate looks delicious! And awesome presentation! And the views…gah. OK. Enough ogling for me..I guess. Your trip just looks like a blast. I am looking forward to your next recap of it!

    gahhhhh look at those hikes and swims! What I would give to swim in the ocean right now!

    Mushroom Risotto is my reason for existing. Do yourself a favour and get the mushroom and truffle risotto at Risottoria in the village. TO DIE FOR!

    After seeing all that delicious food I realized that I need to have breakfast. YUM!!! Your photos are SO BEAUTIFUL! They have totally renewed my life time dream of going to Australia some day. I got very close once, but I’ve never been!! –Lisa

      Thanks Lisa! If you ever have the opportunity you should definitely go! I’ve been to a lot of beaches and I think Australia has the best! Plus it is just such an amazing country.

      It totally did except for the fact that it was incredibly hilly and I felt like I was going to die but at least my fitness is really good now! 🙂

    WOW I can not believe how amazing Australia is! I am so jealous! It looks like you ate really well and it is nice that you managed to sneak in some work out time. You are a better person than me.

      Everyone there is so active all the time it is almost impossible not to do some kind of activity! The food is amazing. They just use different ingredient combinations then what we are used to so it is a real treat!

    I love all of your scenery shots, and that you went to fitness classes with your mom. How fun! I like working out with my mom when we’re together too. Like I said before, I think we’re similar in that when we’re on vacation (and in general actually!), we like to fit in exercise time and be really active, partly so that we can enjoy food/drink indulgences more.

    SO much gorgeousness!! The champagne, the water, the food, ugh! I would have much rather spent my Christmas like that.

    I’ve never heard of Sh’bam but it sounds like fun! I’m picturing you leaping around the room, haha.

    There really can never be enough photos and HOORAY for you running!!! I mean, really. How could you not? I cannot believe you ever even came home. I think I would have just stayed it’s so gorgeous.

    SO much fun!! I enjoyed all of the photos, everything is plated so prettily! I have yet to really try a les mills program but one just came to my gym so I am totally trying it out soon! My week was good minus the sickness 🙂

    What a great view! Yes, running would be fab there.

    All of your food looks so good. A mix between naughty and nice. 🙂 It’s interesting to see how differently (and healthier) other countries eat compared to Americans.

    The photos were great! I love all the food pictures, they’re amazing. I especially want that lamb! I know the leap you are referring to in Sha’bam! I unfortunately, can’t get into Sha’bam on a regular. The main reason I drop in from time to time is to support the instructor team. Only going once a month seems to help me enjoy letting my hair hang. I told you, I’m not the dancer 🙂 Glad you got to take so many classes! FUN!!!

    As a “dance fitness junkie” the BodyPump to warm up for Sh’Bam is a “blast!” All the AU classes (BodyBalance, BodyAttack, BodyStep) are worth the try and true to the reviews! Get ’em where you can!

      I do love Les Mills. I used to take the classes all the time and even taught BodyJam but they aren’t that popular in my area because of the number of “boutique fitness studios”. I make a point on taking as many as I can when I am in Australia. Pump is super popular and after that I would say Attack.
