Mind/Body After Baby: Month 6

Mind/Body After Baby: Month 6

Where did the time go?  Basically from the moment you are pregnant until you have the child, everyone constantly tells you that “they grow so fast” or “they are only babies for a short time.”  I think most first time moms agree that when people tell you this, you think they are insane.  All you can see is a haze of late night feedings, endless diaper changes and a companion that constantly cries and for some strange reason, never wants you to have a shower.  And then, POUF, in a blink of an eye, everyone was right.  Your tiny little newborn is somehow eating solids, trying to learn to crawl and developing an actual personality.  I have no idea how we already got here, but here we are and it just keeps getting better!

Baby

Oh the life of a baby.  Our little man is beyond adorable.  I say this with 100% objectivity.  I would tell you if we didn’t think it was so.  But alas, we won the baby lottery and were given an extremely cute and lovable tiny human.

Eating

Solid food is here but we prefer milk.  I started introducing Cooper to solids at five months but he is kind of a picky eater, which is strange since his father and I are not so picky.  We like to eat–a lot!  Our menus mostly consist of rice cereal, avocado, squash and carrot puree and various fruits that I try to get him to eat without much success.  Most of what goes in, gets spit out although I like to think that some of it is actually making it to his intestines.

Look into my eyes and you will not see where I am putting my hands.

you caught me!

I’m going to really start experimenting with making my own foods but I am also REALLY excited to buy some foods in the US.  Almost everything in Brazil has sugar in it or just is not that healthy.  It is kind of sad but I’ve spent hours looking at baby food on diapers.com.

Sleeping

Oh the little guy is turning into such a good sleeper.  He gets through most of the night these days, sometimes waking for a feed around 5 or 6am and then going back to sleep.  It makes my life so much easier!  He is also still pretty good with naps although I really have to put him down for a nap these days rather than letting him just fall asleep.

Achievements

Oh he wants to move so bad!  The little guy is scooting along on the floor and he has become quite adept at moving in circles.  He is also getting great at grabbing at things, including his toys.

Who me?

I’m trying to teach him to sit up.  He is kind of getting it but he mostly just kind of slowly falls forward and then rolls onto his belly!

Ahhh who could resist that face?

Me

I almost feel like there is no need for a me section anymore…I mean you get enough of me on this blog as it is but I figure I should give you a short little update.

I’m 100% back in terms of fitness although I’m still building up some of the muscular and cardiovascular strength I had pre-baby.  I think I could be stronger in both areas before this point if I really put my mind to it but I’ve been enjoying trying out lots of different workouts and just going with the flow so I don’t feel a huge need to push it right now.  Plus, I am still very strong, I was just uber strong before I got pregnant.

Mentally I feel great!  Coops and I are busy busy little bees and we have so much fun together.  Plus I am really enjoying connecting to other moms.  Becoming a mom is like going back to kindergarten–everyone is new and wants to make friends.  Plus, it is so easy to bond with women over their kids.

Also, I am super excited for my new business venture this summer!  I know this is another shameless plug, but if you are in Cape Cod this summer or know someone who is, send ’em my way!

Can’t believe both our little men are 6 months! Cooper is absolutely adorable. I love the pics of him in the high chair! My first wasn’t super into the pureed foods and now Danny is seeming to follow suit. I can get a couple of bites in, but then he just wants the spoon to chew on, so I try to get a few extra in that way so he gets the flavors! I found with RJ that once I could do some really soft finger foods, he took right to trying lots of new things. Fingers crossed that his brother will be the same!

As far as recipes for baby food go, call me lazy, but I would typically just make some extra of whatever vegetable we were having and started out by pureeing it, then moved on to cooking a little longer and chopping it up really small. It made things easier and also got him used to the flavors that he would be getting as he got bigger. I plan to start trying some of the same with Danny in the next month or so! I also always kept some frozen peas and carrots on hand for a quick, soft side dish for lunches or on the go meals!

Those are all really great ideas. It is so funny because i thought solids would be so much easier but it is so much work.

I just cannot even take his adorableness!!! I mean seriously? How can you stand it? He is too cute! I love the video and I love the two of you together just bonding. The best time of my life has been hanging with my two boys everyday – we’re a team! And so true about getting to know other new moms being like Kindergarten. So great!

Cooper is absolutely adorable! I love the video! You guys both look absolutely fantastic! I don’t 100% go
for ‘baby led weaning’ but reading about it gave me some feeding ideas for Nate when he was younger. The MOM podcast had an episode on it Feb 2014. There are also books on it (the idea that you can give your baby more foods than people usually think of). I think we probably have one of the books kicking around our house. Not that you need any advice or books – you are clearly doing an AMAZING job!!!!

Thanks Suse! That means a lot to me coming from you. I’m going to check out that podcast. How is Alex doing with feeding? He is such a cutie pie!

Yup, I couldn’t agree more…all those people telling me how fast it goes and to enjoy every moment were absolutely right! I mean it’s been half a year since our little ones were born. How crazy is that!?

Cooper is such a cutie! He sounds like he’s doing a lot of the same things as Gianna and Isaac. They’re working on sitting up now and starting to get pretty good at it. They’re doing pretty well with solids. I too thought Gianna was going to be super picky (Isaac will eat anything!), but within the last few weeks, she seems to be more at ease with trying new foods and not spitting it out. Hopefully, that will be the same for your little guy too!

I too feel physically and mentally myself after giving birth. The biggest thing for me is I’m still trying to work on my muscular strength. It’s okay, but definitely not where it was pre-babies. Just curious, what kinds of workouts would you recommend to build up my strength again?

I’ve been doing a ton of barre workouts (Physique 57, barre3 & The Bart Method–all online). I also like Bodypump because it uses heavy weights and is very different from barre training. I also found pilates to be huge for my core. I never did that much pilates before baby but now I find it to be the most effective for rebuilding those muscles.

He is just such a sweet, happy, gorgeous little bubba! I wish I could squeeze him! Sounds like you’ve settled in great and made friends which is fantastic. When it comes to baby food, I made all of Roman’s and my tip is to not forget about herbs and seasonings. Sweet potato with a little cinnamon, or some thyme or parsley in other veggie purees. I also used to make big batches of risottos with lots of different soft veggies (or I’d puree the veggies to go in them), either with rice or quinoa. And I started Roman on Vegemite at 6 months. 😉

These are amazing tips Carly! I am totally going to try risotto for Cooper. I did the cinnamon with pumpkin and carrots today, as per your suggestion. I wasn’t sure if I could use spices or not! I’ll let Pete handle the Vegemite. 🙂

I 100% agree, you have quite the adorable tiny human!! 🙂 I’m glad to hear that his sleeping has gotten a lot better. I’m sure that makes things SO much easier for you, as being exhausted is no fun!

I love these updates!! This is such a fantastic age isn’t it?! I remember it both times very clearly! Wait till he starts walking that’s when the REAL fun begins!! He is so handsome and I am so happy to see that motherhood is agreeing with you so well.
