Hello hello all! So, if you follow me on Instagram, you may have worked out that I am back in the Big Apple baby! Even though I’m living it up state-side, I still want to bring it back to Brazil and talk about amazing acai (pronounced ah-sa-ee. Hello, I speak Portuguese now).
Acai berries come from the acai palm tree, which is native to Brazil and found mostly in the Amazon. The berries are small and purple in color and are harvested and made into a pulp for consumption. In Brazil, acai is most popular as acai na tigela (acai in a bowl), which is basically a smoothie bowl made from acai pulp and typically served with granola, banana and other fruit.
So what’s the big deal with acai? Well, it has a wide range of nutritional benefits including:
High in antioxidants. It is contains more antioxidants than common superfoods like blueberries and cranberries. Antioxidants are chemicals that may stop the damage free radicals cause on your body so consuming them is generally considered beneficial.
It may aid in weight loss. Although this has not been conclusively proven, there are some studies that suggest acai can aid in weight loss. Regardless, it is a fruit that is low in sugar, which is ideal when you are trying to lose weight.
Acai berries contain healthy fats, which are shown to assist with things like healthy hair, skin and nails. Healthy fat also helps keep you fuller longer.
It contains a host of vitamins and minerals, so it’s great for hitting your daily numbers.
It is a source of resveratrol, which has been shown to help with heart health and fight cancer in some studies.
It contains fiber and protein (win-win!).
So basically I throw this into the “good for me” category!
My favorite way to consume acai is the traditional Brazilian way in a bowl-an acai bowl. This amazing recipe is delicious and packed full of morning superfoods!
Readers, are you a fan of acai? What’s your favorite superfood? What do you usually eat for breakfast?
Looking forward to trying this! My breakfasts are similar–fruits, cereal or granola and yogurt to keep it together. Blueberries have often been touted as the super-food, and apparently I believed that!
Enjoy your stay in the states!
