Friday’s Food & Fitness: Focus On Balance Barre Signature

Hello!  Another week down for the books and another weekend on the horizon!  I had a fairly productive week despite being dragged down by this awful cold I mentioned last Friday.  Yes, it is still here.  No, it is not getting better!

But enough about the negative.  Welcome to Friday’s Food & Fitness!

I think I ate food this week.  It’s hard to tell.  I know that I generally can’t smell and so food is about appealing as chalk but I must have eaten.  One thing I am super excited about food-wise is this new snack company I just found out about called Best Berry.

Best Berry Snacks

It is very similar to Naturebox in that it is a subscription-based snack box that arrives at your doorstep once a month full of yummy goodies to satiate your appetite.  Best Berry is focused on bringing you healthier snacks that will be not only great tasting but great for you!

Best Berry Snack Quad

You can choose to receive either 10 packets or 18 packets but the packets are all small so as to provide you with one portion of snack to prevent gorging (ahem), which reminds me of Graze.

Best Berry Choco Therapy

You choose the snacks you want included in your box and then you receive them once a month in a big colorful box that is definitely something to look forward to!  Think of sweet potato chips, mixed nuts and cocoa squares with dates, sea salt and a bit of chocolate.  Yum!  Each snack is designated as lactose-free, gluten-free, vegan, organic or whole-wheat so you know exactly what you are getting.  It was definitely love at first bite.

I’m starting a new series that you will see in Friday’s Food & Fitness that focuses on a different Balance Barre Fitness class so you can become better acquainted with the format and learn more about my favorite form of exercise.  This time we are focusing on Balance Barre Signature class.

So, what is Balance Barre Signature?

Balance Barre Signature is the original Balance Barre class.  A 60 minute barre party, this class starts with a low-impact cardio warm-up, then moves onto upper body toning using light weights before heading to the barre to work the thighs and seat.  Finally, we move down to the mat to work the core and burn out the thighs and seat topping it all off with a nice stretch at the end.

What can you expect taking Balance Barre Signature?

Expect to get sweaty.  We start out with low-impact cardio to rev the heart rate and then we combine upper and lower body moves to keep it up as we move through our toning sequences.  Expect shaking.  We use interval overload to overload the muscles pushing them past their comfort zone and asking more of them.  Expect fun.  Every class includes a little something sassy like some dancing at the barre, hip shaking on the mat or shoulder shimmies.  Expect flexibility.  At the end of each class, we stretch it out to help increase our flexibility and improve the function of our muscles.

How many times a week should I do Balance Barre Signature classes?

We recommend 3-4 times per week.  Check out all of my barre videos to get start on your routine today!

Why do I shake in Balance Barre Signature classes and is that a bad thing?

Definitely not a bad thing!  In barre class we are working deep within the muscle fibers. Unlike other forms of exercise where your muscles can contract and relax as you move through movements, in barre class you are challenging these muscles by holding a sustained contraction for a longer period of time.  This puts a lot of stress on the muscle and causes it to work until exhaustion.  As the muscle becomes exhausted, it draws on the last of its fuel reserve and then the muscle begins contacting and releasing at a high rate of speed in order to conserve its remaining energy.  This contracting and releasing causes your muscles to shake!  Read: you are getting stronger and more fit with every workout!

What are three Balance Barre Signature moves?

Lunge with Bicep Curl

Starting out with the upper body, I love combining upper and lower body moves to keep the heart rate up and work more than one body part at a time.  This classic move targets biceps, thighs and glutes!

lunge-with-bicep-curl-2Narrow V Pulse

This is a classic Balance Barre Signature move done at the barre.  It gets deep into the thighs without looking like too much.

One Leg Bridge Lift

Mat work is one of my favorite parts of class but just because you are lying on the mat doesn’t mean you are resting.  The one leg bridge lift burns the booty!

What 3 songs are on a Balance Barre Signature playlist right now?

Believer- Tiesto Remix by American Authors

Don’t Hold Your Breath by Nicole Scherzinger

Stay the Night by Zedd

A Barre party?! How good is that! What great attitude you have. Thanks for the tutorial on the Balance Barre Signature. Very professional Not sure you know, but I’m at your online class a few times a month! I wonder what I would feel like if I did this 4 times per week!! I’d feel great; alas, not enough time in my week so I do like your 10 minute body blasts, too!
